Biographical history

Reverend William Ellis was born ca. 1730. He arrived in Nova Scotia in 1774 as an itinerant missionary for the (Church of England's) Society for the Propagation of the Gospel. Shortly after arriving, Ellis took over a large mission in Hants County, serving congregations in Newport, Falmouth, Windsor, Cornwallis, Wilmot, and Horton. He married Isabella Colquhoun, with whom he had one daughter, Isabella Ellis. He passed away in 1795 and is buried in the Winsdor churchyard.

Custodial history

Records were accessioned by Dalhousie University Archives in 1970. Prior to that, the materials were partially catalogued by Dalhousie College Library in 1933 in the Edwards Collection.

Scope and content

File consists of seven sermons and writings of Reverend William Ellis, written during his years in the Anglican Church of Canada mission in Hants County, Nova Scotia.

Materials are very fragile. Paper covers are dirty and disintegrating and ink is bleeding and faded in places.
