Glenn Stephen Ells exams

  • MS-14-47, MS-14, Box 134, Folder 5
  • File
  • December 1913 - March 1915
This file contains 25 exam papers given between the junior and senior year for subjects associated with agriculture at the Nova Scotia Agricultural College. Exam papers are mostly typed and cover a range of topics from entomology, dairy, animal husbandry, commercial law, mathematics, and English literature. The exams are annotated and scribbled over and appear to mainly belong to one student Glen Stephen Ells. One exam paper in particular shows strategy planning for a hockey game on the reverse of which Ells was a team-member. Further research on Ells shows him mentioned in early NSAC student papers as having joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force during WWI in summer 1915 and was sent to Great Britain and then Europe via Val Cartier, PQ. As part of a machine gun company he was killed in action in September 1916. All of his service records including training, transfers, will etc are available online at Library and Archives Canada ( ELLS, GLENN STEPHEN; Regimental No: 415526)

Fred Sears fonds

  • Fonds
  • 1898-1907, 1998

This fonds includes published and unpublished papers, correspondence to and from Fred Sears between 1905-1907 while he was Professor of Horticulture at NSAC from 1905-1907. The fonds contains over 200 glass negative and lantern slides discovered in the basement of Harlow Institute, Nova Scotia Agricultural College, Truro, NS around 1997, they are believed to have been taken by Fred Sears. There are also copy negatives and contact prints that were made at a later unknown date. Most of the photographs depict apples and orchard practice. Notes on some of the sleeves of the negatives suggest that they date from the period 1898-1907. We have been unable to document who actually took the photographs, which show considerable skill and an artistic flair for composition. There are 120 b&w 5" x 7" prints made from the glass slides, and documents related to the exhibition of the fonds in the MacRae Library.

Biographical : Fred C. Sears taught at the Horticultural School in Wolfville which operated from 1894-1904 and then took up a position as Professor of Horticulture at NSAC from 1905-1907. In 1907 he accepted a position as Professor of Pomology at the Massachusetts Agricultural College. It was there in 1914 that he wrote a textbook entitled Productive Orcharding. The book is illustrated with photographs akin to those in this collection. One photo is the same as one in the collection, but from a different angle. It seems likely that many photographs illustrating the book were taken in Nova Scotia, probably Wolfville. Sears dedicated his book to Robert W. Starr, a close friend and former president of the Nova Scotia Fruit Growers Association.

Stephen Archibald's student protest photographs

  • MS-2-805
  • Collection
  • 1967 - 1971

Collection comprises 34 mounted photographs of political demonstrations and protest marches organized by Dalhousie students between 1967 and 1970. The photographs were taken by students for the Dalhousie Gazette and/or Pharos yearbook and were compiled and printed by Stephen Archibald for a show in the Student Union Building in Spring 1971. The scope and content notes for the images are drawn from the background information provided by Stephen Archibald, who writes: "The pictures were taken by young men in their late teens and early 20s who had no formal training, but who were drawn to photography because it provided a visual, aesthetic outlet that was missing from their academic university life. We also had no particular political beliefs or insight. The editors at the Gazette were left-leaning during this period so it is not surprising that we were assigned to photograph demonstrations that were organized, in large part or totally, by Dal radicals."

The photographs were printed and mounted by Stephen Archibald on F5 high-contrast paper to exaggerate their graphic nature, and printed full frame, which gives them a black border. As he explains in his notes, this was part of the contemporary aesthetic, ensuring that the viewer was aware that the images were composed in the frame, with nothing edited or cropped out. Most of the photographs are mounted, and the dimensions provided in the physical descriptions do not include the mount board.
