File contains four documents related to David Murray's record collection. All of the record collection items contain Murray's location coding. File contains a handwritten 44-leaf notebook containing, alphabetically, Murray's "Record Library of Opera & Secular Music", a short handwritten addendum of record collection additions from 1936-37, a 49-leaf typescript variant collection list and a similar 49-leaf handwritten collection list with different location codes.

Record library of opera and secular music

Item consists of a handwritten catalog of a personal record library of opera and secular music compiled by David Murray in the mid-to-late 1930s. The catalog is arranged in alphabetical order variably by category or musician, with associated records held in the collection listed underneath in a left-hand column (with corresponding storage location in the opposite column). The catalog was compiled in an address book.

Draft handwritten manuscript list of musical movements

Item consists of a handwritten 41-entry list of short musical pieces compiled by David Murray, with the composer of each piece noted in the right-hand margin. The first 23 entries on the list are under the heading 1936-37, the following 18 entries are under the heading 1937-38, while the final unnumbered entry is under the heading Halifax--Jan. 39. One page of item contains 20 examples of humorous quotations written by Murray, possibly for use in future sketches. While unrelated to the musical list, the pages appear to have been removed sequentially from a notebook.

Draft typed and handwritten manuscript of a record catalog

Item consists of a two copies of an untitled 49-leaf (98 leaves in total) double-sided record collection catalog compiled by David Murray in the early- to mid-1940s. The first copy is a typescript, while the second copy is a handwritten version of the catalog. Each catalog is arranged alphabetically by performer, with an abbreviation of their operatic role or primary instrument. Murray also made additions in pencil to the typescript version of the catalog (vital statistics of the performer, the latest date being 1946), and additions to the catalog in ink. Each entry in the catalog contains a corresponding filing code.

Item consists of an introductory piece about the career and influences of Frédéric Chopin, written for a radio broadcast introducing the playing of Chopin's Nocturne No. 13 (about "the march of fate crushing a life") and its "direct opposite", Waltz Op. 70, No. 1, "the very essence of gaity [sic] and sprightfulness."

File contains a bound notebook used by Kenneth Leslie for the purposes of writing musical notations and scores, presumably from the 1930s. The notebook is largely blank, with only four pages used by Leslie. The first page contains an untitled melody fragment four bars long in the F-major key, written in pencil, with notations in both bass and treble. The second page contains a fragment of a song entitled "Sheep and Lambs", with music by Kenneth Leslie and words by Katharine Tynan (misspelled "Katherine"), with treble notations, in 3/4 metre and the F-major key. The third entry is a song entitled "So It Rises So It Soars", with words and music by Leslie, written in G-major key, the first two lines being "Builder of my growing soul / Found in deeply as you must". The fourth and final entry is an eight-bar fragment, in G-major, following a leaf that was torn out.

File contains a handwritten manuscript of a song entitled "My love she walks not with me", with words and music by Kenneth Leslie, undated (but written presumably in the mid-1930s, after the collapse of his first marriage). The song is written in F-major, contains 24 bars of music in treble, and begins with the lines "The fragrance of the hawthorn and the rose after rain / Makes my misery completer". Music and words are written on only one page.

Most of the program notes were written while Anthony Pugh was in Fredericton, New Brunswick, with the exception of those for Beethoven's Quartet in F major, op. 59 no. 1, which were written while he was at Pembroke College in Cambridge, England, and which include handwritten analytic excerpts from the quartet, written by Pugh. The file also includes Anthony Pugh's analysis of Beethoven's Piano Sonata in C minor, op. 111, for which he also wrote program notes, and programs (with notes by Anthony Pugh) for performances by the Atlantic Symphony Orchestra and Anton Kuerti (presented by the Creative Arts Committee of the Universities of New Brunswick and Saint Thomas). The file also includes extensive handwritten notes by Pugh on Beethoven's Fidelio and an analysis of one of its recitatives and duets by "Mark," which was sent to Pugh from Seaford, East Sussex, England.
