Plans

Series contains drawings and blueprints of the company's land holdings, buildings, and equipment/machinery. The company developed some plans in-house, but the majority were outsourced to various engineers or architects, some of whom were based in Nova Scotia. Series arranged alphabetically by archivist. Duplicates and generic plans that did not pertain directly to the company were discarded.

Harza Administrative Records

This series contains administrative records, including a considerable amount of internal correspondence and memos the majority of which pertain to Charles MacLennan's activities with Harza. The specific project files in this series are valuable for their insight into the administration of various Harza projects. These records serve as examples as to how the company was organized and maintained.

Bay of Fundy

These are general records relating to tidal power in the Bay of Fundy and attempts to gain approval and funding for the project.

The Last Dwarf

Series consists of records documenting the administrative, creative, financial, legal, and publicity and marketing activities of this project. The project was a potential series of thirty-minute animated programs with computer generated backgrounds. It was in pre-development but was never completed. The project was set in the near future and proposed to create the character of a strange but lovable outsider looking for clues about his origins. A companion comic book series was also developed. This series contains agreements, applications, a budget, character sketches, comic books, contract lists, research, a script, a series proposal, a press kit and posters, and trademark and treatment documents.

Laughabout

Series consists of records documenting the administrative, creative, financial, legal, production, and publicity and marketing activities of this project. This potential thirty-minute comedy series of thirteen planned episodes intended to follow three stand-up comedians on the road in Canada, Italy, and Japan. The project was conceived by David Vainola and Ron Thompson and was developed by imX with CTV. It was eventually dropped by the broadcaster. This series contains agreements, biographies, correspondence, budgets, series guides, a schedule, and a one-sheet promotional publication.

Lawyers in Love

Series consists of records documenting the administrative, creative, financial, legal, and production activities of this project. This potential feature film was to tell the story of a contemporary married couple, both lawyers, wanting to escape from their marriage. As they finalize the details of their separation at their Cape Cod summer home, murder becomes the simpler solution. This series contains agreements, applications, biographies, budgets, cast lists, correspondence, scripts, a synopsis, and video recordings.

North/Northeast Ventures

Series consists of records documenting the administrative, financial, and legal activities of this group. North/Northeast Ventures was a branch of imX Communications that owned an interest in the CineSite Film and Television Production Centre in Burnside, Nova Scotia together with other film and television production companies. This series contains agreements, correspondence, a corporate seal, and wind-up of the corporate group.

General files of the Atlantic Symphony Orchestra

Series contains general administration files created by the administrative activities of the ASO. Records include correspondence, artist pamphlets and catalogues, contracts, reports (including auditor's reports), planning documents, surveys, advertising proofs, memoranda, transcriptions, and committee meeting minutes, summaries and policies. The series also includes applications for positions in the orchestra as well as records relating to auditions.

Powers Brothers' photographs

Series consists of photographs taken or commissioned by Powers Brothers. These photos are primarily of plumbing or heating jobs the company completed around Nova Scotia and displays of the company's goods and services, which were shown at local exhibitions (such as the Nova Scotia Fisheries Exhibition). The series also includes photographs of employees, Powers Brothers storefronts in Lunenburg, and parade floats sponsored by the company. Many of the photos are not dated, and people in the photographs are not identified.

Sound recordings of Powers Brothers

Series consists of broadcast records for the radio show "75 Years of Progress, Powers Brothers Limited," commemorating the company's 75th year in business. This show was divided into several parts and described the history of Powers Brothers. It aired on the local radio station CKBW, owned by the Maritime Broadcasting Corporation. Transcripts of these shows are located in the Print Material series, file 174-1. Series also contains correspondence about the recordings.

Unions and associations of Powers Brothers

Series consists of documents pertaining to various unions and associations to which Powers Brothers belonged or had a professional connection. The unions tended to be based in various regions of the Maritime Provinces; Powers Brothers secured contracts in many locations throughout the Maritimes, and consequently had to cooperate with many different local unions. The union-related documents primarily consist of correspondence and copies of labour agreements. The majority of associations in this series were based in Nova Scotia, but some were national in scope (such as the Mechanical Contractors Association of Canada). There are three main types of associations to which Powers Brothers belonged: professional associations; retail associations; and general, local business associations, namely the Lunenburg Economic Development Commission. The association-related documents include membership certificates, authorized- dealer certificates, correspondence, memos, minutes, and reports. Bulk from 1965 - 1985.

Financial records of the La Have Outfitting Company

This series contains cash books, journals, ledgers, insurance amounts, fish, coal and salt sales and prices, vessel accounts and inventory of items in stock and sold. The recorded information is spread throughout various ledgers and in some cases journals, cashbooks and ledgers contained information regarding accounts, as well as insurance information or fish sales.

This series comprises primarily letters written to Halle and Mabel Bigelow from their son, John Robert, during his time in Newfoundland working for the Anglo-Newfoundland Development Company.

Legal documents of Powers Brothers

Series consists of legal contracts pertaining to, or agreed to, by the company and some of its prominent employees (namely Frank Powers and A. F. Powers). The majority of these documents are deeds, leases, and mortgages relating to the Powers Brothers' real estate holdings in Lunenburg and surrounding area. This includes property in the area of Lapland, Lunenburg County, which A. F. Powers co-owned during the mid twentieth-century. The series also includes: agreements between the company and other organizations, which are usually financial in nature (such as loan repayment agreements with the Royal Bank of Canada); employee agreements; insurance papers; professional licenses (e.g. Plumbing licenses); and the will of A. F. Powers. Some files in this series, particularly those pertaining to insurance and the Lapland property, also include correspondence, usually with local government or legal counsel. Job estimates and tenders

Series consists of documents pertaining to various job estimates calculated by Powers Brothers for jobs located in Nova Scotia and the Atlantic Provinces. There are two types of documents: estimate sheets and estimate files. The estimate sheets were generally created in response to job requests from organizations (namely businesses, hospitals, and schools), although some pertain to residential jobs. The majority of estimate sheets were deselected; the ones that have been retained are representative of how Powers Brothers calculated and presented estimates to potential clients. The estimate files contain materials used in the creation of job quotations. These materials include: correspondence (with clients, contractors, and vendors), calculation sheets, plans, brochures, catalogues and price lists, manuals of parts to be used or repaired by Powers. Series consists of all financial records relating to Lunenburg Outfitting Co. The types of records include cash books, cheques registers, production cost sheets and general ledgers. Part of an accounts receivable book can be found in the Sales and Shipping Operations. Financial records relating to vessels can be found in the series Vessel Papers.

This series consists of operational records of Lunenburg Outfitting Co., specifically sales and shipping. The types of records include fish sales and shipping books, salt books, certificate of incorporation and a list of crew members.

Personal archives of Wilfred E. Knickle

Some of the records in this series belonged to Captain Adam Knickle. The following are subseries under Wilfred E. Knickle; correspondence, Heckman's Island School, legal, personal papers, Lunenburg Outfitting Co. and vessel papers. Correspondence consists of all correspondence by Wilfred E. Knickle; Heckman's Island School consists of auditor reports, meeting minutes, a teacher agreement and other records related to the school; Legal consists of records such as wills, deeds and insurance belonging to Adam Knickle, Wilfred Knickle and his wife and her family; Personal Papers consists of Knickle and his wife's marriage certificate, Captain Adam Knickle's shareholders book of the Bluenose schooner and various note and bank books belonging to Wilfred Knickle; Lunenburg Outfitting Co. consists of order books, printed material regarding the scallop and fish industry and an oil and gas ledger; Vessel Papers consist of records related to vessels, such as bills of sale, register of shipping and a protest.

Contract records of Powers Brothers

Series consists of financial records pertaining to Powers Brothers' various job contracts. These jobs were often located in Nova Scotia, but some were located throughout the Atlantic Provinces. The records in this series consist of ledgers and journals (some of which are unbound). The ledgers include expense totals, copies of invoices, and payments made by clients. The journals are more detailed, and were used to record the following job-related costs: material, labour, freight, and taxes. There are journals for both closed and active contracts. Both types of record books use job numbers to identify each contract. Bulk from 1972-1985.

Financial records of Powers Brothers Limited

Series consists of various records documenting the financial activity of Powers Brothers, including general ledgers, annual financial statements, income tax forms, inventories, and stock journals. These records were created and maintained at Powers Brothers headquarters in Lunenburg, although the annual financial statements were produced by an accounting company in Halifax. The company's daily financial transactions and rough annual summaries were recorded in the general ledgers. In addition to the ledgers, the company maintained rough calculations (including trial balances) in separate files that were often used as supporting documentation for the annual financial statement calculated by their accountants at the end of each fiscal year. The company documented its physical assets with annual inventories, which include lists of job materials (e.g. Sheet metal, paint), real estate, vehicles, machinery, etc. Also included in this series are income tax documents pertaining to both the company and its employees, and stock records. The latter includes journals detailing sales and transfers of stock, as well as certificates and receipts. The series also contains the financial documents for Powers Marine Services, a subsidiary company and include financial statements, income tax returns, and general records of financial transactions that occurred throughout the period listed in the file title. Some files also include correspondence.

Insurance files of A.M. Smith and Company

Series consists of documents pertaining to insurance policies taken out by A. M. Smith and Co., including reports, claims, and copies of policies. The policies are for fire insurance, marine insurance, and cargo insurance. Cargo policies were required for every shipment of fish made by A. M. Smith and Co. Due to the transitory nature of these particular policies, the majority were discarded, although a few were maintained as samples.

The series includes legal documents related to the operations of A.M. Smith and Company. These include deeds, mortgages, leases, agreements, articles of association, bonds, and trademark registrations. Also includes legal documents pertaining to Parkdale Realty.

Correspondence of A.M. Smith and Company

Series contains the business correspondence of A.M. Smith and Co. and the personal correspondence of Albert and Fletcher Smith. The majority of the correspondence is business correspondence that was created by various officers of the company, including Albert Smith (President), Fletcher Smith (Vice-President), Arthur Power (Secretary-Treasurer), Evalds Andersons (Comptroller), and other employees,. Business correspondence is addressed to officers of A.M. Smith and Co. and clients and business partners around the world, but primarily in Central America. The subject of business correspondence covers all aspects of A.M. Smith's operations, including salt fish, fish importing and exporting, pricing and cost sheets, business transactions, shipping routes and schedules, insurance, and other company operations. Correspondence related to Acadian Fisheries, Smith Canneries, real estate ventures, and other business ventures of the Smith family may be extant. The personal correspondence of Albert and Fletcher Smith is also found in this series. Personal correspondence is addressed to various officers of A.M. Smith and Co., family members, and friends, and covers business and family activities.

Oland's Breweries (1971) Limited

Series contains the records of Oland's Breweries (1971) Limited. Records range from before the company's inception to 1977. Some records involve Oland and Son Limited and Olands Brewers Grain and Yeast Limited. Series is broken into eight Sub-Series: Administrative, Beer Production, Correspondence, Labour and Employee Relations, Legal, Marketing and Advertising, Photographs, and Sales Department.

Administrative Sub-Series contains the records of company executives, and include meeting minutes, company reports on public relations and budgets, inter-office memorandums, and some insurance claims.

Beer Production Sub-Series contains a brew book and reports on beer cartons.

Correspondence Sub-Series contains correspondence between executives of Oland's Breweries (1971) Limited and various businesses and associations. Correspondence is typically filed by the correspondent.

Labour and Employee Relations Sub-Series contains meeting minutes of meetings between company management and union leaders, employee share purchase plans, and the records of the Trustees of the Pension Plan of Oland's Breweries (1971) Limited.

Legal Sub-Series contains a lease agreement and power of attorney.

Marketing and Advertising Sub-Series contains records from the Sales Department that relate specifically to marketing and advertising. Sub-Series includes advertising budgets and estimates, correspondence with advertising firms, advertising proofs, and reports.

Photographs Sub-Series contains photographs of beer delivery trucks and a company reception.

Sales Department Sub-Series contains all other records from the Sales Department, including sales reports, requests for donations and customer complaints, meeting minutes, and inter-office memorandums and correspondence regarding beer delivery and sales.

Oland's Brewers Grain and Yeast

Series contains records relating to the administration and operation of Oland's Brewers Grain and Yeast. Series is broken into seven subseries: Administrative, Correspondence, Financial, Labour and Employee Relations, Lindwood Farms, Marketing and Advertising, and Production and Inventory Reports.

Administrative subseries contains a register of shareholders, property assessments, and other documents relating to the general activities of the company.

Correspondence subseries contains correspondence regarding fairs, exhibitions, and other events Oland's Brewers Grain and Yeast participated in or sponsored. Subseries also includes orders and correspondence from Smith Brokerage Limited, a grain dealer used extensively by Oland's Brewers Grain and Yeast.

Financial subseries contains financial statements, statements of cattle and feed purchases, a journal, and a ledger.

Labour and Employee Relations subseries includes labour agreements with Local 361 of the International Union of United Brewery, Flour, Cereal, Soft Drink, and Distillery Workers of America and an indenture to Ronald Lamond, an employee of Oland's Brewers Grain and Yeast.

Lindwood Farms Sub-Series contains records relating to the operation and management of Lindwood Farms and Northfield Farms. Records were primarily created after the sale of the farms to Oland's Brewers Grain and Yeast, but some earlier records are extant. Sub-series contains a blueprint of a farm building and a map of Halifax with the farm property outlined, correspondence regarding cattle, fairs and exhibitions, and the general activities of the Farm, inventories of cattle, feed analyses, documentation on farm procedures, appraisals of land and cattle, meeting minutes, and other records relating to the general operation and administration of the Farm. Sub-Series also contains financial statements, statements of expenses, sales reports, a journal, deeds to farm land and a copy of an expropriation agreement with the Province of Nova Scotia.

Photograph Sub-Series contains photographs from the Atlantic Winter Fair and from Northfield Farm in Kennecook, Nova Scotia.

Marketing and Advertising subseries contains two pamphlets titled "Valuable information on the use of Oland's Brewers Grain and Yeast." Additional marketing and advertising materials that relate to Oland's Brewers Grain and Yeast and other subsidiaries of Oland and Son Limited are filed in the Marketing and Advertising subseries of Oland and Son Limited.

This series contains all general business correspondence. The majority of the correspondence is between Acadian Supply Co. and its clients and shareholders, discussing business, vessels, suppliers or accounts. Clients include the Town of Lunenburg, the Department of Fisheries and The Department of Transport. Suppliers include the Dominion Coal Company, Customold Plastics and Blue Coal Ltd.

Financial records of Acadian Supplies Company

This series contains a record book, financial statements and shareholder reports, a cash book, sales reports, inventory and an order book for the saw mill. The majority of the records are financial statements for both Acadian Supplies and Acadian Vessels listing their expenditures for the years they have been in operation.

Legal matters of Acadian Supplies Company

This series contains insurance policies, legal contracts, court papers, Nova Scotia Company Act and shareholder related records. The insurance policies cover stock, buildings and machinery of Acadian Supplies Company legal contracts include an indenture and use of land. Court papers record major debts owed to Acadian Supplies Company. The shareholder related records include a sample of stock certificates for Acadian Supplies and Vessel Company, shareholder meeting minutes, lists of shareholders and stocks owned by Acadian Supplies.

Series contains, balance sheets and other financial records, correspondence regarding investments and investment clubs, and notices to the creditors and proof of claim under the Bankruptcy Act. Series contains records that document various financial activities of L.E. Shaw Limited, including an account ledger, annual reports, circulars on company shares, and a report on productivity in Nova Scotia.

Business and personal archives of William McMillan

Sousfonds contains documents relating to the mercantile and shipping activities of William McMillan. McMillan was active in the business between 1893 and the early 1930s. The material includes financial records from other merchants he purchased or sold to; correspondence regarding the shipping of those goods; papers regarding the vessels he owned or contracted to sail the goods to different parts of the world, especially to the West Indies; and correspondence from individuals who ran the ships. Also included are telegram notices, personal correspondence and other material.
