Insulters of death and other poems of the great departure : a book of solace

File contains a book of poems, published by John Daniel Logan of the 85th Overseas Battalion, C.E.F., Nova Scotia Highland Brigade. The book was published by L. Clyde Davidson & Co. of Halifax, Nova Scotia and contains the following poems: "Invocation," "Insulters of Death," "Timor Mortis," "Sursum Corda," "Renouncement," "A Requiem," "The Greater Love," "For an only Son," "Poe of Princeton," "Flame of God (Rupert Brooke)," "The Soul's Supreme Adventure," and "Gone on Ahead Awhile." The book also includes a prose preachment entitled "The Fatal Paradox and Sin of Sorrow for the Dead."

File contains Logan's manuscript for "Preludes: Sonnets and Other Verses," dedicated to Elizabeth Gordon Logan. The manuscript includes "An Epistle in Criticism" and and essay, "The Rhythmical Dummy" in addition to 16 sonnets and 12 other poems. The sonnets are: "L'America et l'Avenir," "Sonata Tragica," "As a Wounded Bird," "Resignation," "In Honor of Homer," "To a Student," "Midnight in Dakota," "Apostate and Crowned," "Amor Mysticus," "Earth's True Lords," "To a Low Comedian," "Guide me as a Star," "Tenior Mundi," "Dei Philosophorum," "The Solitary," and "In Memoriam." The other poems include: "To Pallas: A Prayer," "Eros Athanatos," "An Incident of Lone Pine," "Said the Angler to the King," "The Men Behind the Guns," "The Secret," "If I were God," "De Mortuis," "Per Amica Silentia Lunae," "Renouncement," "Where Green Graves Lie," and "Mezzotints of Love."

The manuscript also includes press notices and critical reviews on Logan's "Sonnets."

Correspondence from Daniel G. Mason

File contains a letter from Daniel G. Mason of Columbia University concerning a poem that John Daniel Logan submitted for publication in the "New Music Review." The file includes the copy of the poem that Logan submitted, which is on the work of the composer Lowell Mason (1792-1872), Daniel G. Mason's grandfather. The file also includes a manuscript copy of a poem, possibly by Jean Grey, dated June 15, 1913.

File contains a letter from the Australian operatic soprano Nellie Melba concerning a short poem that John Daniel Logan wrote about her singing. The file includes a copy of the poem as printed in a newspaper. The letter also references a photograph that Melba sent to Logan.

File contains programs from recitals presented at the Hart House Theatre, including the Hart House String Quartet (Geza de Kresz, Harry Adaskin, Milton Blackstone, and Boris Hambourg); Bertram Forsyth (prose and poetry, assisted by Colin McPhee); Geza de Kresz (violin, with Norah Drewett on piano); and a Beethoven centenary commemoration presented by the Hart House String Quartet, Kilbourn String Quartet (Gustave Tinlot, Gerald Kunz, Samuel Belov, and Paul Kefer), and London String Quartet (James Levy, Thomas Petrie, H. Letter and card to Kenneth Leslie from Nanette Bowditch

File consists of a letter (dated February 1, 1973, from Success, Saskatchewan) and an undated Christmas card [ca. early-1970s] written by Nanette Bowditch, daughter of Kenneth Leslie's brother Eric. The letter discusses the activities of her children, George and Emily, the recent publication of his book of poetry, and Kenneth's relationship with his sisters, Marjorie and Emily. The Christmas card contains a brief letter and is signed by Nanette, her husband Walter, and their two children.

Music notebook

File contains a bound notebook used by Kenneth Leslie for the purposes of writing musical notations and scores, presumably from the 1930s. The notebook is largely blank, with only four pages used by Leslie. The first page contains an untitled melody fragment four bars long in the F-major key, written in pencil, with notations in both bass and treble. The second page contains a fragment of a song entitled "Sheep and Lambs", with music by Kenneth Leslie and words by Katharine Tynan (misspelled "Katherine"), with treble notations, in 3/4 metre and the F-major key. The third entry is a song entitled "So It Rises So It Soars", with words and music by Leslie, written in G-major key, the first two lines being "Builder of my growing soul / Found in deeply as you must". The fourth and final entry is an eight-bar fragment, in G-major, following a leaf that was torn out.

God and the intellectuals : [manuscript]

File contains a typed draft manuscript (with a few inked corrections) of a sermon delivered by Kenneth Leslie, likely in the early 1940s, entitled "God and the Intellectual". File addresses the role of colleges in teaching metaphysics, before moving on to the threat posed by "the sickness of America [and the] whole modern world. [...] Call it transcendentalism. Call it idealism" during the Second World War, wherein the motto "transcendentalism : greed' was the antiphonal change for the burying of [early] New England", much as it has been in the run-up to war, and the efforts to prevent the acceptance of "absolute ideas as substitutes for organic thinking", as in fascism, which demands "all or nothing" answers.
