Membership files

Series contains case files of the members of the Writers' Federation of Nova Scotia, as well as membership lists. Not every member has a case file. These membership files contain a large variety of records including biographical information, correspondence, manuscripts, and photographs.

The membership policy of the Writers' Federation of Nova Scotia is very broad. Anyone seriously interested in creative writing (including students and beginners) as well as accomplished professionals are eligible for membership in the Federation.

Programs developed and administered by the Women in Media Foundation

Series contains material relating to the promotion, development, and administration of the programs and workshops that were run by the Women in Media Foundation. Materials include completed evaluation forms from programs, curriculum material, script and teaching material, camp essays, and final reports. Series also contains applications, campers lists, release forms, and promotional materials.

The following is a list of programs that Women in Media Foundation was involved in: Girl's TV Camp (later named Girls TV and New Media Camp), Women's Technical Internship, Diversity Workshop, Girl's Enterprise workshop, the Travelling Girls Documentary workshop, lesson plans and teaching materials for teachers, WTNdowment scholarship, CyberSafe program, Girl's Mini-Media workshop, Train the Trainer workshop, and Media Literacy workshop.

Programming materials may also be inter-filed within other series.

Personal papers of Ransom Myers

Series contains correspondence—written and electronic—press materials collected by Ransom Myers (including magazines and newspaper articles), personal photographs of trips, and Myers’ curriculum vitae.

Ransom Myers’ litigation and consultancy

Series consists of records regarding Ransom Myers’ work as a consultant under the incorporated company Ransom A. Myers & Associates Limited Natural Resources Consultant. Series includes correspondence, datasets, annotated reference articles and government documents, invoices, signed contracts, affidavits, court documents, materials prepared in anticipation of litigation, press, declarations and meeting minutes.

Rilla-my-Rilla

Series contains records for a play manuscript by Catherine Banks based on L.M. Montgomery's Rilla of Ingleside.

Individuals

Series consists of research materials, correspondence, and biographical information of individuals who Gordon Duff had in his collection. Many of these records are research materials used by Duff in teaching or publication. The majority of the files listed are pharmacists or pharmacy clerks. Additional biographical materials of other pharmacists can be found in the Jessie I. MacKnight and George A. Burbidge series.

Publicity and promotion

Series contains primarily photocopies of printed reviews and publishers' promotional materials, along with copies of feature articles by and/or about Lesley Choyce. There are also some records regarding promotional tours and school readings. Similar materials may be found within the Correspondence series.

Margaret's Museum

Series consists of records documenting the administrative, creative, financial, legal, production, and publicity and marketing activities of this project. This feature film, based on the short story by Sheldon Currie entitled "The Glace Bay Miners' Museum," focuses on coal miners and their families in 1940s Cape Breton. The 114-minute drama was co-produced by Imagex, directed by Mort Ransen, written by Sheldon Currie, and starred Helena Bonham Carter, Clive Russell, and Kate Nelligan. It was nominated for eleven Genies in 1995, winning the awards for Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actress. The film was also awarded best picture awards at the annual San Sebastian Festival in Spain, the Vancouver International Film Festival, and the Atlantic Film Festival. All records were kept as an example of the imX production process. The series contains accounting and payroll records, agreements, applications, biographies, budgets, call sheets, correspondence, cost reports, a credit and contact list, crew lists, a dialogue list, location scout stills, location sketches, music cue sheets, press kits, press releases, production documents, production stills, posters, production reports, research notes, schedules, scripts, a supplier contact list, a synopsis, and video recordings.

Ransom Myers' teaching material

Series contains slides, lecture and presentation transparencies and PowerPoints used by Ransom Myers in his classes at Dalhousie University and external lectures. Series also contains exams, assignments, teaching evaluations, thesis drafts, research notes, defence presentations and invitations.

Arctic Shelf Tracking and Physics Array (ASTAPA)

Series consists of correspondence, grant applications, newspaper clippings and reports related to the Arctic Shelf Tracking and Physics Array Project, a proposal by Ron O'Dor and his colleagues to commemorate the International Polar Year (IPY).

Love, Sex and Eating the Bones

Series consists of records documenting the administrative, creative, financial, legal, production, and publicity and marketing activities of this project. This feature film is set in the contemporary black urban underground of Toronto and focuses on a man in the early stages of a relationship with a woman while trying to overcome his addiction to pornography. The 100-minute romantic comedy was co-produced by imX, written and directed by David Sutherland, and starred Hill Harper and Marlyne Afflack. This series contains agreements, a budget, correspondence, daily production sheets, a marketing plan, a project summary, a proposal, producer's notes, a public relations packet, readers' reports, scripts, schedules, a synopsis, and test screening data.

Martin Bridge: In High Gear!

Series comprises records regarding the development, writing, publishing and reception of Jessica Scott Kerrin's sixth book in her Martin Bridge series, published by Kids Can Press. Records types include correspondence; print and electronic manuscripts; notes; and published reviews.

Planners

Series contains Janet Conners' monthly and day planners, covering the years 1989-2007. Planners contain scheduling information related to Conners' activism and personal activities.

Sound recordings

Series contains sound recordings related to the Nova Scotia Mass Choir from 1992 to 2007.

Recordings include various performances, interviews, studio recordings, and radio broadcasts.

Communications of the Women in Media Foundation

Series contains outgoing and incoming correspondence, which deal with areas of finance, grant applications, as well as communication between partner organizations and program applicants. Series may also contain correspondence belonging the Executive Director. Correspondence is also inter-filed in other series, related to the subject.

Ransom Myers’ publications

Series contains draft manuscripts, annotated draft manuscripts, correspondence, reviewer comments, datasets, correspondence with publishers, annotated reference articles, and offprints of journal publications by Ransom Myers and co-authors.

Personal library of Ransom Myers

Series contains publications collected and annotated by Ransom Myers, providing contextual information to his research. Series contains government reports, organizational reports and annotated vertical reference files (including photocopies) as well as white papers and theses. Series has been grouped into subseries according to broad research interests.

Livestock reference resources

Series consists of reference material relating to Maritime livestock shows, sales, and auctions, as well as livestock in Canada and in India. Subseries include materials covering beef cattle, dairy cattle and dairy practice, horses, sheep and goat, and swine published between 1880-2007.

Personal papers of David Renton

Series contains information about individual actors, Renton's administrative contributions to organizing the 1987 Canada Games and the 1990 World Figure Skating Championships, conferences and workshops, festivals and showcases, Neptune Theatre, Nova Scotia Drama League, Portus Theatre Productions, theatre companies and university theatre departments, and committees, associations, and unions to which Renton belonged. Also included are clippings and publications (primarily theatre- and film-related), financial records and grant applications, memorabilia, production-related materials, programs and invitations, school-related materials, and contracts, resumes, and awards.

Big Top Under a Northern Sky

Series consists of records documenting the creative, financial, and production activities of this project. The project was a potential documentary on the history of circuses in Canada that was pitched to the CBC as a one-hour documentary or a documentary series. This series contains background information, interviews, video recordings, a proposal, the CBC pitch and feedback.

The Movies Come to Gull Point

Series consists of records documenting the administrative, creative, financial, and legal activities of this project. The project was a potential feature film based on a combination of Will R. Bird short stories, including the title story. It was to focus on a fictional Newfoundland village in 1915 and three local boys who are drawn into the First World War. This series contains agreements, applications, biographies, a budget, correspondence, the original story, outlines, production notes, research materials, one-sheets, scripts, and schedules.

Productions of Mulgrave Road Theatre

Series consists of records related to productions performed between 1977 and 2006. Files include the following materials: programmes, annotated production and prompt scripts, correspondence, show reports, tour itineraries, scripts, actor contracts, agreements, set designs, rehearsal schedules, props list, technical information, and production schedules.

Martin Bridge: Ready for Takeoff!

Series comprises records regarding the development, writing, publishing and reception of Jessica Scott Kerrin's first children's book and the first in her Martin Bridge series, published by Kids Can Press. Records types include correspondence; print and electronic versions of manuscripts; resource materials and style guides; and published reviews.

Programs and publications

Series contains the printed programs given by the Symphony to those in attendance at concerts and fundraising events. It also contains newsletters and season brochures for single-ticket sales and subscriptions.

Nova Scotia Agricultural College extension services records and campus research project records

Series contains records relating to agricultural extension services and campus research project records at the Nova Scotia Agricultural College from 1972-2006. Record types include textual records, photographs, posters, video cassettes, computer media, correspondence, conference programs, maps, books and newspapers. Subseries' include the Columbia project, field trial reports of the Nova Scotia Crop Development Institute, and Nova Scotia Agricultural College Department of Plant Science reports.

Nova Scotia Agricultural College records and photographs relating to special events, celebrations, and workshops from 1928-2005

Series contains photographs, documents, flyers, scripts, and audio recordings of special events, celebrations, and workshops at the Nova Scotia Agricultural College. Records relate to Founders day, anniversaries, exhibitions, dramas, open houses, commencements, etc. between 1928-2006.

Series contains materials depicting Brian Hall in the media. Written materials include newspaper articles, certifications, and correspondence. Related materials include photographs.

Seats 3A & 3C

Series consists of records documenting the administrative, creative, financial, legal, production, and publicity and marketing activities of Seats 3A & 3C productions. This innovative film series tells contemporary stories in low-budget, digital, feature-film formats developed and entirely owned by Imagex. There are four films in this series: Dragonwheel, Love that Boy, Past Perfect, and The Wild Dogs.

Dragonwheel, a romantic comedy set in Halifax, Mexico City, Barcelona, Tokyo, and on flights in between, was the directorial debut of Tricia Fish, writer of New Waterford Girl. Fish also wrote the screenplay. Dragonwheel starred Graham Gavine and Krista MacDonald.

Love That Boy tells the quirky story of an over-achieving, soon-to-be college graduate improbably falling in love with her 14-year-old neighbour. The 85-minute drama was written by Andrea Dorfman and Jennifer Deyell, directed by Andrea Dorfman, and starred Nadia Litz, Adrien Dixon, Nicki Barnett, PJ Crosby, and Dax Ravina.

Past Perfect follows two passengers sitting in adjoining seats, Seats 3a and 3c, on a flight from Vancouver to Halifax who fall in love and then meet two years later. The film was the directorial debut for Daniel MacIvor, who also wrote the script. The 82-minute drama's cast included Daniel McIvor, Rebecca Jenkins, and Maury Chaykin. Past Perfect won the award for Outstanding Performance as an actor at the Atlantic Film Festiva in 2002.

The Wild Dogs is set and photographed in contemporary Bucharest and brings together the stories of a reluctant city dog-catcher, a diplomat's wife, and a visiting Canadian pornographer. It was directed and written by Thom Fitzgerald, who also played a leading on-camera role. The 97-minute drama starred Alberta Watson, David Hayman, Rachel Blanchard, Thom Fitzgerald, and Mihai Calota. It won awards at the 2002 Atlantic Film Festival for Best Canadian Feature, Best Direction, Excellence in Sound Design, and Excellence in Editing.

Churchmembers Assembled to React to AIDS [CARAS]

Series contains materials from the organization Churchmembers Assembled to React to AIDS (CARA or CARAS) and includes meeting minutes, financial records, correspondence, and educational materials. Fonds also contains records from two projects run by CARA: Morton House, a hospice for people living with AIDS, and AIDS-LINK, a project aimed at connecting people with AIDS to resources and support.

Portfolios

Series contains records of the portfolios, or committees, that proposed, developed, and implemented the Federation's activities and programs. The programs and services provided by the Writers' Federation of Nova Scotia are divided into categories, or portfolios. Each portfolio, headed by a member of the Executive Committee, is responsible for a different group of functions performed by the Federation.

This series contains seven sub-series: Competition and Awards Development and Administration, Promotional Programs and Public Relations, Education Programs, Professional Services, Newsletters and Library, and Development Programs.

The Competition and Awards Development and Administration sub-series contains records regarding the Atlantic Writing Competition and the various awards administered by the WFNS. These include the Evelyn Richardson Memorial Literary Award, the Thomas Head Raddall Atlantic Fiction Award, the Atlantic Poetry Prize, and the Ann Connor Brimer Award for Children's Literature.

The Promotional Programs and Public Relations sub-series contains records regarding the various programs and events held by the WFNS. These include the Annual Literary Salon and the Word on the Street Festival.

The Education sub-series contains records regarding the Writers in Residence Program, the Writers in the Schools Program, the Brown Bag Lunch Program, and classroom resource materials. Types of records include correspondence, feedback, memos, promotional material, and reports.

The Professional Services sub-series contains records regarding the services that WFNS offers to its members. These include advocacy work on behalf of members, contractual, copyright and legal advice, the Grievance Committee, market assistance, and typing and duplicating services. The types of records contained in this sub-series include correspondence, manuscripts, press clippings, press releases, reference materials, reports, and surveys.

The Publishing sub-series contains records regarding publishers, publishing agreements, and publishing programs. The types of records contained in this sub-series includes correspondence, reference material, reports, and submission guidelines.

The Newsletters and Library sub-series contains the WFNS newsletter Writers' News, (later renamed Eastword), as well as contributions, correspondence, and other materials related to the production of the newsletter. It also contains Notes from Ma Fed E-Loop, Events and Announcements, a weekly e-mail update sent to members. Correspondence, collection strategies and wish lists, and other records regarding the library are also included here.

The Development Programs sub-series contains materials regarding the Manuscript Reading Service, the Writers-in-Community Program, and various workshops, seminars, and courses held by the WFNS. The types of records include correspondence, evaluation forms, manuscripts, photographs, press clippings,

Gil Winham's teaching records

Series contains course materials created by Gil Winham for classes taught at McMaster University; the Department of Political Science at Dalhousie University; and at the Schulich School of Law. These include courses in American foreign policy, theories of international relations, diplomacy and negotiation, and international trade law. Record types include lecture notes, syllabi, reading lists, examinations and correspondence.

AquaNet

Series consists of records created and collected by Richard Apostle in the course of his aquaculture research conducted under the auspices of AquaNet: Network of Centres of Excellence in Aquaculture, which was an NSERC-funded grant of 10.9 million dollars for which Richard Apostle was a co-investigator through the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. The two projects on which he worked were “The Institutional and Social Structure of Aquaculture: A Comparative Study,” with Gene Barrett and John Phyne, and “The Social Construction of Environmental Risk and Benefits: Risk to Whom? Benefits to Whom?”, with Ralph Matthews, Susan Elliot, Brian Elliot and John Phyne.

Center for Local and Regional Development, Klaksvik, Faroe islands

Series consists of records created and collected by Richard Apostle that document his involvement in establishing a regional development research institute in Klaksvik, Faroe Islands. His primary scholarly output from this collaborative endeavour was the book The Restructuration of the Faroese Economy: The Significance of the Inner Periphery, by Richard Apostle, Dennis Holm, Gestur Hovgaard, Olavur Waag Hognesen and Bjarni Mortensen. A subseries contains records documenting the development of a book about the amalgamation of municipalities in the Faroe Islands. Records types include correspondence; draft manuscripts; studies and papers; budgets and financial reports; meeting minutes; and research data and notes. Records include correspondence and reports in Faroese, Icelandic and Danish.

Folle Embellie

Series consists of records documenting the administrative, creative, financial, legal, production, and publicity and marketing activities of this project. This feature film is set in 1942 war-time France and follows inmates released from an institution by the chaos of the war. The 100-minute drama was written and directed by Dominique Cabrera and starred Miou-Miou, Jean-Pierre Leaud, Yoland Moreau, Gabriel Arcand, and Pascale Montpetit. A France/Belgium/Canada co-production, the film was completed in French with English sub-titles. This series contains agreements, applications, a cast list, a chain of title, correspondence, cost reports, credits, dialogue translations, director's notes, incorporation documents, press releases, publicity-related materials, schedules, scripts, a synopsis, and video recordings.

Helix Animation

Series consists of records documenting the administrative, creative, financial, legal, and publicity and marketing activities of this group. This is the branch of imX Communications that operated an animation studio in Halifax and in Sydney. The series contains accounting records, agreements, auditor's reports and financial statements, a company outline, a company publicity profile, correspondence, employment records, management reports, and project materials.
