The Impossible Museum fonds

Fonds contains a selection of documents, drawings, material samples, and images collected by D'Arcy Wilson and Lisa Bouraly during a two-year research project focused on Thomas McCulloch and Andrew Downs. The fonds is part of an exhibition, the "Impossible Museum," curated by Lisa Bouraly and featuring works by D'Arcy Wilson and Amy Malbeuf. The exhibition is presented by Eyelevel Gallery in the Thomas McCulloch Museum in the Dalhousie University Life Sciences Centre from March 5 to April 30, 2020.

Material includes a selection of texts and notes tracing Bouraly's research while preparing the exhibition. These documents were selected by Wilson from Bouraly's collection. Fonds also includes an encapsulated drawing of Thomas McCulloch, material swatches linked to one of the works in the exhibition, scraps and drawings left over from a collage, photographs of works in progress, a copy of the exhibition essay, and other material related to the exhibition. Fonds also includes photocopies of several nineteenth century texts reviewed by Bouraly during her research.

The file box includes a pair of white gloves and a list of materials in the box.

The majority of the records were created during the process of concert-planning, including special concerts, annual concerts, tours, and concert series. These records include artist contracts, marketing and development documents, internal memos, and correspondence with artists and sponsors.

Records also consist of internal management records, including personnel records, office management files, and the files of the Board of Directors, Executive Director, and Chief Executive Officer. The financial administration of the Symphony is documented though budgets, statements, ledgers, and tickets sales data.

The fonds also contains concert programs and promotional material such as posters, advertisements, flyers, newsletters, and other publications. The final section of the fonds consists of audiovisual and graphic material. There are audio recordings of performances and interviews of Symphony personnel as well as video recordings of advertisements and performances. The graphic material includes promotional photographs and photographs of the orchestra.

The fonds consists of records related to Richard Perkyns' research undertaken in writing The Neptune Story: Twenty-Five Years in the Life of a Leading Canadian Theatre and editing Major Plays of the Canadian Theatre 1934-1984 . The fonds also includes a copy of his doctoral thesis, The Impact of the Expressionists Movements on British and American Drama and Theatre Practice (1968) and records which pertain to his involvement with the Halifax Independent Theatre. Fonds contains materials related to Janet Conners' advocacy work for recipients of tainted blood products and other persons with HIV/AIDS. Janet's and her husband, Randy Conners, contracted HIV when Randy, a hemophiliac, was treated with infected blood. After publicly announcing Randy's diagnosis in 1991, the Conners provided testimony to the Royal Commission of Inquiry on the Blood System in Canada [the Krever Inquiry], and became advocates for persons living with HIV/AIDS. Janet revealed her HIV positive status upon Randy's death in 1994. Materials in fonds include legal documents, correspondence, speaking notes, press releases, day planners, awards and honorary degrees, and photographs.

Stephen Archibald's student protest photographs

Collection comprises 34 mounted photographs of political demonstrations and protest marches organized by Dalhousie students between 1967 and 1970. The photographs were taken by students for the Dalhousie Gazette and/or Pharos yearbook and were compiled and printed by Stephen Archibald for a show in the Student Union Building in Spring 1971. The scope and content notes for the images are drawn from the background information provided by Stephen Archibald, who writes: "The pictures were taken by young men in their late teens and early 20s who had no formal training, but who were drawn to photography because it provided a visual, aesthetic outlet that was missing from their academic university life. We also had no particular political beliefs or insight. The editors at the Gazette were left-leaning during this period so it is not surprising that we were assigned to photograph demonstrations that were organized, in large part or totally, by Dal radicals."

The photographs were printed and mounted by Stephen Archibald on F5 high-contrast paper to exaggerate their graphic nature, and printed full frame, which gives them a black border. As he explains in his notes, this was part of the contemporary aesthetic, ensuring that the viewer was aware that the images were composed in the frame, with nothing edited or cropped out. Most of the photographs are mounted, and the dimensions provided in the physical descriptions do not include the mount board.

Byron Ulric Hatfield Photograph Collection

Collection contains seventy-seven glass plate lantern slides created by Byron Ulric Hatfield in Nova Scotia during the early twentieth century. Hatfield took photographs of coastal landscapes, churches and other buildings, and people working and in social settings. He also photographed published illustrations of Acadian life, including several illustrations of scenes from Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's epic poem "Evangeline: A Tale of Acadie." Hatfield developed his own photographs and created "magic lantern" slides to use in an illustrated lecture titled "The Land of Evangeline: The Land of Romance, Legend, and Picturesque Beauty." He gave lectures in various locations throughout the eastern United States.
