The George E. Smith Company, named after its founder, was a hardware company in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Upon Smith's death on February 16, 1916, the company remained in operation. The fonds includes the correspondence (including financial transactions) with suppliers and credit reports commissioned by the company concerning their clientele. The collection illuminates the hardships for Canadian companies prior to and during World War I.

This fonds consists primarily of records related to the Board of Governors collected by Farquhar during his time on the board, including minutes; the report A Survey and Plan of Fund-raising for Dalhousie University; and a file of correspondence, newspaper clippings, and publications related to President Stanley Carleton’s resignation.

The fonds also includes some other miscellaneous materials collected by Farquhar related to the history of Dalhousie or the province, and associations/events with which he was involved. These records include pamphlets, song books, biographical sketches of some notable Nova Scotians, and a number of event programs and invitations.

This file contains 25 exam papers given between the junior and senior year for subjects associated with agriculture at the Nova Scotia Agricultural College. Exam papers are mostly typed and cover a range of topics from entomology, dairy, animal husbandry, commercial law, mathematics, and English literature. The exams are annotated and scribbled over and appear to mainly belong to one student Glen Stephen Ells. One exam paper in particular shows strategy planning for a hockey game on the reverse of which Ells was a team-member. Further research on Ells shows him mentioned in early NSAC student papers as having joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force during WWI in summer 1915 and was sent to Great Britain and then Europe via Val Cartier, PQ. As part of a machine gun company he was killed in action in September 1916. Handwritten copy of the poem "The Decision," by E.J. Pratt, accompanied by a condolence letter from Viola Pratt to Mrs. Harris Esterbrooks upon the death of her son. The poem is dated 1923, but Viola Pratt's 1949 letter indicates that her husband copied it to accompany her correspondence.
