Correspondence of Frank Parker Day

This series contains all correspondence found in the fonds. Due to the broad scope of Day’s correspondence and the sometimes blurry lines that exist between his personal versus business letters, the series is not ordered by subject. Rather, correspondence is ordered chronologically by decade and alphabetically within the decade.

Series contains records relating to the research, publication, and reception of Thomas Head Raddall's non-fiction works. Typical materials include publishing contracts; originals, proofs, and/or plates of book illustrations; research materials, notes, and correspondence; manuscripts and in some cases printer's proofs; notices and reviews.

Bora Laskin: Bring Law to life

This series consists of research material collected by Girard and used to write his book, Bora Laskin: Bringing Law to Life, such as articles, correspondence, cases, family and friends’ papers and writings by Laskin, as well as original drafts of the manuscript for the book and review drafts, photographs used in the books and correspondence by Girard discussing the book.

James Stanley Hillis' records

Series consists of materials regarding James Stanley Hillis' student life, including notebooks, a Dalhousie song book, and other textual records.There are also two manuscripts regarding Hillis & Sons Limited.

Ronald Justin Inness' correspondence

Series consists of correspondence between Ronald Justin Inness and different individuals, including Noel R.P. Bonsor, Ernest D. Brown, W. Kayke Lamb of the Public Archives of Canad, and others, regarding ships and shipping companies.

Olands Brewery Limited

Series contains textual records, blueprints, and photographs from 1901 to 1973, with the majority of records created between 1950 and 1971. Series contains records from Simeon Jones Brewery, Red Ball Brewery, and Olands Brewery, but the majority of materials were created by Olands Brewery Limited. Note: Records that deal jointly with Olands Brewery Limited and Oland and Son Limited are filed in the Oland and Son Limited Series.

Series is broken into 10 subseries: Administrative, Beer Production, Blueprints, Correspondence, Financial, Labour and Employee Relations, Legal, Marketing and Advertising, Photographs, and Sales Department.

Administrative Sub-series contains meeting minutes of the Board of Directors and annual general meetings, memorandums and proposals relating to the construction of a new brewery in Lancaster, New Brunswick, construction progress reports, and other memorandums and documents of executive members of the company.

Beer Production Sub-series contains monthly and weekly bulletins on beer production written by J.K.S. Manuel and distributed to executives of the company, a plant operation manual, plans for brewing equipment, a sample of daily and weekly production reports, and brewery inspection reports. Blueprints subseries contains a blueprint of the overall layout of the brewery and prints for structural supports and storage tanks. Some beer production records for Olands Brewery Limited are also filed in the Beer Production Sub-Series of Oland and Son Limited.

Blueprints Sub-series contains a blueprint of the overall layout of the brewery and prints for structural supports and storage tanks.

Correspondence Sub-series contains correspondence between Olands Brewery Limited and various businesses and individuals it interacted with. File titles are either the name of the correspondent or the subject of the correspondence in the file. Subseries also contains the personal correspondence of J.KS. Manual (Plant Manager) and other correspondence mixed in the business papers of the company. Correspondence before 1958 is primarily from Red Ball Brewery.

Financial Sub-series contains financial statements, a general ledger from Simeon Jones Brewery, detailed cost statements of beer produced, balance sheets, and a sample of share certificates. Some of the financial figures of the company were reported in consolidated financial statements of Oland and Son Limited, A. Keith and Son Limited, and Olands Brewery Limited. These statements are filed in the Financial subseries of Oland and Son Limited. Some financial records for Olands Brewery Limited are also filed in the Beer Production Sub-Series of Oland and Son Limited.

Labour and Employee Relations Sub-series contains meeting minutes from the labour management committee, pension plan certificates, lists of withdrawals from the employees' pension plan, reviews of the employees' pension plan, and draft and published labour agreements between Olands Brewery Limited and Local 364 of the International Union of United Brewery, Flour, Cereal, Soft Drink, and Distillery Workers of America.

Legal Sub-series contains a memorandum of agreement and stock book, share transfers, patent certificates, indebtures, mortgage agreements, and real estate agreements.

Marketing and Advertising subseries contains some correspondence about advertising , a proposal prepared by Backman Advertising, sample beer bottle labels, and an advertising poster for a shuffleboard tournament. Advertising and marketing records relating to general Olands products and advertising campaigns are filed in the Marketing and Advertising subseries of Oland and Son Limited.

Photographs subseries consists of four photographs, 1 of the original Army and Navy Brewery in Halifax, Nova Scotia and three prints of David L. Cashen for his appointment as marketing manager.

Sales Department subseries consists of monthly and weekly sales reports and bulletins, reports on deliveries to New Brunswick Liquor Commission stores, statistical reports, and copies of sales reports sent to the Brewers Association of Canada.

R. G. Dun Credit Reports

The R. G. Dun Credit Reports are a window into the lives of general merchants, businessmen, and farmers in the early 1900s. These reports paint a picture of the financial hardships Canadians faced in the years leading up to World War I.

Employee records

This series contains records of Dominion Chair Company's employees during the first half of the twentieth century. The majority of the records are time books, which provide employee names, the number of hours, or days, they worked, and their wages. The six time books often each contain two years of data, and were created between 1901 and 1943. Employee records also include a payroll journal, bonus sheet, a notebook of an employee's travel expenses, and a book describing the amount of wood hauled by each employee.

Correspondence

Series contains correspondence related to Lawrence Johnstone Burpee's research on James De Mille. Letters sent to and from Burpee between 1901 and 1946.

Scholastic records

Series contains both the harmony workbooks created by Ellen Ballon during her early schooling as well as certificate letters issued from McGill University regarding her honorary degree and the scholarship program she instigated.

Legal matters of Adams and Knickle Limited

Legal Matters series consists of Adams & Knickle agreements, legal transactions and vessels related legal matters. Types of documents include articles of association, certificates of incorporation, court papers, deeds, estate settlements, fishermen's articles, fishing contracts, notices of protest, affidavits, and other vessel related legal materials. The information contained in this series includes legal relations Adams & Knickle had with its shipping partners, agents and the vessels used to transport goods and undertake fishing operations. They also document shareholder interests and any events of a legal nature that impacted on business a specific

Literary Writings of Frank Parker Day

This series contains manuscripts for all autobiographical writings, essays, novels, plays, poetry, and short stories present in the Frank Parker Day fonds. Most works are not individually dated, so the materials have been group into the following categories: Biographical and autobiographical writings, novels (published and unpublished), plays, poetry, and stories.

Education

This series consists of records relating to education reform across Canada, with a focus on Nova Scotia’s school system. Types of records include reports, academic papers, notes, submissions, printed material, correspondence and interview transcripts.

Halle Bigelow

This series comprises primarily letters written to Halle and Mabel Bigelow from their son, John Robert, during his time in Newfoundland working for the Anglo-Newfoundland Development Company.

Vatcher

Series contains administrative, correspondence, financial, legal, and other printed material from L.W. Vatcher Limited, a subsidiary of A.M. Smith and Co. Vatcher was also engaged in fisheries and fish exporting. Correspondence in this series is addressed to business clients and partners around the world and includes many of the same addressees as the Correspondence Series. The correspondence covers all aspects of business operations, including fish sales and exports, pricing, shipping routes and schedules, and general operations of the company. Financial records include account ledgers, certificates, insurance claims, budget reports, and other documents related to the financial management of the company. Legal records include deeds, contracts, agreements, and other documents related to the incorporation and documentation of the company's assets and activities. Printed materials include newspaper clippings, an annual report of the Bank of Nova Scotia, and two cable code books.

Press books and scrapbooks

Series contains various biographical sketches intended for press releases, as well as scrapbooks of press releases about Ellen Ballon and her performances.

Insurance files of A.M. Smith and Company

Series consists of documents pertaining to insurance policies taken out by A. M. Smith and Co., including reports, claims, and copies of policies. The policies are for fire insurance, marine insurance, and cargo insurance. Cargo policies were required for every shipment of fish made by A. M. Smith and Co. Due to the transitory nature of these particular policies, the majority were discarded, although a few were maintained as samples.

Financial records of the La Have Outfitting Company

This series contains cash books, journals, ledgers, insurance amounts, fish, coal and salt sales and prices, vessel accounts and inventory of items in stock and sold. The recorded information is spread throughout various ledgers and in some cases journals, cashbooks and ledgers contained information regarding accounts, as well as insurance information or fish sales.

Shipping

This series contains a variety of information related to the process of shipping goods by A.M. Smith and Company. This includes vessel papers, freight rates and contracts, export order and papers, papers regarding rates and regulations for shipping, and customs forms. Some items kept as examples of the procedures involved in shipping goods, such as contact lists, reports, and cable code books.

Company papers of A.M. Smith and Company

Contains items from various small companies that were originally kept in series such as "subject"; includes stock certificates, meeting minutes, memos, incorporation papers, agreements and leases, journals and ledgers -- Dauphiney, Dan, Company Limited; Georgian Limited; Earle-Smith Partnership; Eastern Fisheries Limited; Fudge Shipping Company; Scotia Corporations; Sea Nymph Fisheries; Smith/Romkey.

Dalhousie University

Series consists of records directly relating to Aitchison’s career as a professor at Dalhousie University in the Political Science department. Types of records include exams, class lists, assignments, student papers, faculty and department memos and meeting minutes and lecture notes.

Interest Book

This book is another example of the meticulous record keeping of the Dominion Chair Company. These are interest records that were credited to the company. They represent various working relations with companies that purchased merchandise from the DCC.

Scrapbooks and offprints

Series contains published materials collected and arranged by Stewart, including newspaper and magazine cuttings, printed copies of his sermons and addresses, and journal offprints. The bulk of the material was created by Stewart, although some of the scrapbooks contain reviews of Stewart's work as well as articles about him. Many of the newspaper and magazine cuttings are glued into commercial scrapbooks, and his Obiter Scripta ("random writings") volumes are primarily bound and paginated journal offprints and magazine cuttings, sometimes including a dated table of contents and/or an index.

Personnel

Series contains agreements with local unions, constitutions, and records pertaining to MT&T’s employees, including: employee booklets, employee military records, employee handbooks, lists of employees, and employee benefit plans.

Professional papers of Robert Logan

This series consists of materials relating to Robert A. Logan's career . This ranges from his work as a surveyor in the Canadian North, early aviation, his Prisoner of War, WWI and WWII experiences, and a number of other jobs he held during his life. Topics covered include war, aviation, surveying, early airlines, and naval voyages to the far north and south Pacific.

Medical papers

Series consists of prescriptions, medical bills, prescription import notices (from medicines imported into Canada from Switzerland), as well as correspondence between Dr. Spengler in Switzerland to Clauda Smith in Halifax spanning 1934-36, 1939 and 1940. Also included in this series is one chest x-ray of Clauda Smith, taken in 1929. Clauda ultimately died of tuberculosis, and many of the papers refer to that particular ailment.

Personal records of Alan Creighton

Series consists of works by Alan Creighton that were of a private nature, including correspondence, diaries, and photographs. Diaries are the largest component of this series and cover a wide range of topics, including reminisces of the past, hopes and dreams for the future, and relation of daily life and encounters with various people. The records also include several select items and works that were saved, but not written, by Alan Creighton, in addition to assorted memorabilia.
