New Waterford Girl

This feature film is a 95-minute comedy that tells the story of coming of age and wanting to go down the road and escape 1970s Cape Breton. This re-telling of a perennial Atlantic Canadian story is now told from the perspective of two girls and the challenges of actually leaving. It was also notable for being written by Tricia Fish as her first script after her year at the Canadian Film Centre. The film was co-produced by Imagex, directed by Allan Moyle, and starred Liane Balaban, Nicholas Campbell, Cathy Moriarty, Andrew McCarthy, Tara Spencer-Nairn, and Mary Walsh. New Waterford Girl was nominated for seven Genie Awards and won best Canadian and Nova Scotia features at the Atlantic Film Festival. It was also screened at film festivals in Berlin, New York, Rotterdam, Sundance, Toronto, and Vancouver. The project is a thirty-minute pilot for a television series on alternative medicine that was never broadcast. It was hosted by Ann Dirksen, directed by Ron Murphy, written by Valerie Mansour, and developed with Robin Johnston (the producer of the CBC’s Street Cents). Records regarding Nova Scotia same-sex legal challenges

Series includes records derived from Ross Boutilier's legal challenge to the province of Nova Scotia regarding same-sex marriage protection and his Canadian Human Rights Tribunal challenge to have same-sex marriages acknowledged and declared eligible for relevant benefits. The series also includes documents derived from Wilson Hodder's legal challenge regarding same-sex benefits. Materials include legal documents, correspondence, notes, and clippings.

Flight : Searching for Scotland

This 50-minute documentary for television follows and documents traces of Scottish identity which survive in Canada and includes extensive visual evidence of Scottish influences across Canada. The program was based on characters created by Wayne Johnston and was about a young man who spent his childhood as a child star and now has to find his own identity. The Divine Ryans

A feature film set in 1960s St. John's, Newfoundland, The Divine Ryans was based on the Wayne Johnston novel of the same name and was the first of Johnston's novels to be made into a feature film. The 90-minute drama tells the story of how young Draper Doyle tries to solve the mystery of his father's death with the help of an eccentric uncle. Johnston also wrote the screenplay. The Divine Ryans was directed by Stephen Reynolds and starred Pete Postlethwaite, Robert Joy, Wendel Meldrum, Mary Walsh, and Jordan Harvey. It was nominated for three Genies and won the Best Actor Award for Jordan Harvey and Best Atlantic Canadian Screenwriting at the Atlantic Film Festival. It was shown at film festivals in Dublin, Vancouver, and Sedona, among others. Files for this production have been fully retained. Sweet Angel Mine

A 94-minute psychological thriller, this Canada/United Kingdom co-production was set and filmed in Nova Scotia, written by Sue Maheu, and directed by Curtis Radcliffe. Key cast members include Alberta Watson, Anna Massey, and Oliver Milburn. The film won the 1997 International Fantasy Film Special Jury Award. Bone Cage

Series contains materials related to the development, publication, and production of Bone Cage, including notes and research material, sketches, partial and complete manuscripts and typescripts, production records, and other material.

Bone Cage is a portrayal of life in rural Nova Scotia. The main character is Jamie, a 22 year old forestry worker doing 12-hour shifts operating a wood processor, clear-cutting for pulp. At the end of each shift, he walks through the destruction he has created looking for injured birds and animals and rescues those he can. Jamie's desire to escape this world is thwarted by his fear of leaving the place where he has some status. Bone Cage examines how young people in rural communities, employed in the destruction of the environment they love, treat the people they love at the end of their shift.

The play was written with financial support from a 1996 Canada Council grant. It was initially meant to deal with systematic violence in rural communities. While writing the play, a new character began to emerge and Banks took time to develop this one-woman show that became Bitter Rose.

Bone Cage was published by Playwrights' Canada Press. It won a national competition run by Theatre British Columbia and won the 2008 Governor General's Literary Award (English) for Drama. In October 2007, it was co-produced by Forerunner Playwrights Theatre and Ship’s Company Theatre and performed at Neptune Theatre’s Studio Stage in Halifax, Nova Scotia. It was also produced by Mulgrave Road Theatre in Guysborough, Nova Scotia, Downstream Theatre in Calgary, Alberta (2009-2010 ), and Matchstick Theatre Productions in Halifax (2017).

This feature film tells the story of a venerated English novelist obsessed with a young American B-movie actor. The 93-minute drama was co-produced by Imagex, directed and written by first-time director Richard Kwietniowski, and starred John Hurt and Jason Priestley. Kwietniowski was awarded prizes for the best new director at BAFTA in London, at Cannes, and at the New York Film Festival.
