The fonds consists of architectural plans, Bass River picnic files, correspondence and invoices, counter books, customer and employee records, export papers, interest books, journals, ledgers, legal documents, merchandise invoices, photographs, printed materials, reports and shareholder papers, sales books/journals, sales invoice copy books, statement books, and stock inventories, spanning over 100 years from 1870 to 1975. These materials illustrate accounting methods, the production of and market for chairs, shipping processes, relationships with other companies and the community, etc. The majority of the fonds consists of correspondence and invoices, both to and from Dominion Chair, including orders for company goods, for factory equipment, and items to stock the general store. Together the items are useful in understanding the organizational structure, management, and operations of the Dominion Chair Company, and provide insight into business operations in Nova Scotia throughout the late 19th and 20th centuries.

Fonds includes the transcripts of conversations Fred Brodie had with Charles Murray and David Gutnick, and with John Bell. Fonds also includes newspaper clippings collected by Fred Brodie on the Canadian Congress of Labour and Trades and Labour Congress of Canada merger, the Halifax Labour Temple, the Halifax Typographical Union, the Teann Ghlac Black Friday coin, along with a variety of letters to the editor. Also included are reference materials for the ITU - Herald contract, the CHFX radio scripts, the Royal Commission on Newspapers' presentation, and a letter written by Fred Brodie to the Halifax Labour Temple.

Fred Sears fonds

This fonds includes published and unpublished papers, correspondence to and from Fred Sears between 1905-1907 while he was Professor of Horticulture at NSAC from 1905-1907. The fonds contains over 200 glass negative and lantern slides discovered in the basement of Harlow Institute, Nova Scotia Agricultural College, Truro, NS around 1997, they are believed to have been taken by Fred Sears. There are also copy negatives and contact prints that were made at a later unknown date. Most of the photographs depict apples and orchard practice. Notes on some of the sleeves of the negatives suggest that they date from the period 1898-1907. We have been unable to document who actually took the photographs, which show considerable skill and an artistic flair for composition. There are 120 b&w 5" x 7" prints made from the glass slides, and documents related to the exhibition of the fonds in the MacRae Library.

Biographical : Fred C. Sears taught at the Horticultural School in Wolfville which operated from 1894-1904 and then took up a position as Professor of Horticulture at NSAC from 1905-1907. In 1907 he accepted a position as Professor of Pomology at the Massachusetts Agricultural College. It was there in 1914 that he wrote a textbook entitled Productive Orcharding. The book is illustrated with photographs akin to those in this collection. One photo is the same as one in the collection, but from a different angle. It seems likely that many photographs illustrating the book were taken in Nova Scotia, probably Wolfville. Sears dedicated his book to Robert W. Starr, a close friend and former president of the Nova Scotia Fruit Growers Association.

In addition, the fonds contains two certificates of Dr. Walsh and 9 b&w photos taken in different events such as conferences, retirement gatherings, and schools. Photos were taken and collected between (1910-1963).

Also included are many manuscripts on a variety of topics relating to Tupper's historical research, ranging from John Cabot and the early explorers to lesser-known local events in the history of Nova Scotia. Also present is a small collection of personal diaries and copies of deeds and legal documents from the Tupper family.

The fonds also consist of legal records, mainly indentures and insurance policies for the business, sales and operations records and vessel records, which mainly consist of insurance policies, charter parties and protests. Also included in the fonds are records belonging to the Frieze family such as estate papers, and records from David Frieze's time as a justice if the peace for Hants County, along with electoral records and records belonging to the Maitland Presbyterian church, Sons of Temporance and Maitland school which both Frieze and Roy were involved in.

The George E. Smith Company, named after its founder, was a hardware company in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Upon Smith's death on February 16, 1916, the company remained in operation. The fonds includes the correspondence (including financial transactions) with suppliers and credit reports commissioned by the company concerning their clientele. The collection illuminates the hardships for Canadian companies prior to and during World War I.

This fonds consists primarily of records related to the Board of Governors collected by Farquhar during his time on the board, including minutes; the report A Survey and Plan of Fund-raising for Dalhousie University; and a file of correspondence, newspaper clippings, and publications related to President Stanley Carleton’s resignation.

The fonds also includes some other miscellaneous materials collected by Farquhar related to the history of Dalhousie or the province, and associations/events with which he was involved. These records include pamphlets, song books, biographical sketches of some notable Nova Scotians, and a number of event programs and invitations.
