Dalhousie University student information cards arranged by student numbers

Series contains student registration cards. The cards contain information about students registered at Dalhousie University between 1968 and the mid-1980s. Cards typically contain information about previous education, year of enrollment, age at enrollment, degree sought, subjects studied and marks received, name(s) of parent or guardian, and home address.

Dalhousie University yearbooks

Series comprises Dalhousie University yearbooks, including Pharos; the College of Pharmacy's Mortar & Pestle and Modo Opimum; Faculty of Law yearbooks; the School of Physiotherapy's Amicus Curia; Dalhousie's former Department of Education yearbooks; and the yearbooks of Nova Scotia Technical College and the Technical University of Nova Scotia.

Dr. Johnson’s Travelling Medicine Show

Series contains audio reels from the CKDU radio 88.1 program Dr. Johnson’s Travelling Medicine Show. This program features Dr. Johnson of Dalhousie Student Health. It is part of the “Upwardly Mobile” program (CKDU’s morning Public Affairs program) at 8am on Thursdays, hosted by Jennifer Garvey and Mike Hymers.

Earth Action

Series contains audio reels from the CKDU radio 88.1 program Earth Action. This program is a weekly environmental radio show by the Ecology Action Centre, established in 1971 Nova Scotia after a course held at Dalhousie University called Living Ecology. The program began in 1987, and was a 15 minute show hosted every Monday at 5:30PM consisting of interviews, a feature called “Lets Clean It Up,” (which focused generally around recycling with the immediate goal of increasing individual awareness about dangerous household hazardous waste), and environmental news. The original team consisted of Robert Pross, engineer; Leslie Shaw, Wayne Hall, Cristina Pekarik, Liz and Debrah Westerburg.

Event programs, flyers, and promotional materials

Series contains duplicate programs, flyers, and other promotional materials from fonds in the Nova Scotia LGBT Seniors Archive. Materials in series include flyers and event cards for the Halifax Fetish Ball, flyers for a speaking engagement and meet and greet with South African political activist Simon Nkoli, flyers and programs for the Awake The World HIV/AIDS awareness event, and programs and program inserts from Mr. Atlantic Canada [M.A.C.] Leather contests.

Everett MacDougall's photographs

Series contains photographs, portraits, prints, and postcards of sea captains and ships. Most of the material has notes by Everett Macdougall on the verso. These notes contain information about the origins and builders of the ships as well as biographical information about the sea captains in the portraits.

Exhibition files

Series contains exhibition files created by the Dalhousie Art Gallery. Exhibition files contain administrative records that document the planning and promotion of exhibitions presented at the Dalhousie Art Gallery from its inception in 1953 to the present day. Some known exhibitions do not have corresponding exhibition files, but the series provides a comprehensive record of the gallery's exhibitions.

Activities documented in exhibition files vary, but typically include transportation and insurance of exhibited works of art, compensation and accommodations for artists or curators, preparation of promotional material and exhibition catalogues, organization of public events, and coordination of touring exhibitions. Exhibition files may include correspondence, insurance documents, contracts, invoices, invitations, interdepartmental memos, floor plans, lists of artworks, handling instructions, condition reports, photographs, newspaper clippings, reviews, and other material.

From a Different Perspective

Series contains audio reels from a half-hour magazine format program on CKDU radio, 97.5. The program was originally hosted by CKDU staff and explored problems in the developing third world through interviews and current news stories. Some of the later episodes were from external radio stations.

From these Roots

Series contains audio reels from the CKDU radio program, From these Roots. The series was part of CKDU's public affairs program The Evening Affair. From these Roots includes features and interviews with African-Canadians, primarily from Nova Scotia.

Gaezette : newsletter of the Gay Alliance for Equality

Series contains copies of Gaezette, a publication which was originally published as the newsletter for the Gay Alliance for Equality. It was published by a non-profit collective between 1984-1995, when it changed its name to Wayves. It existed to inform lesbians, gay men, bisexuals and transgender people across Atlantic Canada of activities in their communities, and to promote those activities and support their aims and objectives.

Gay and Lesbian Association [GALA] posters, banners and flags

Series includes posters, banners and flags created or collected by the Gay and Lesbian Association (GALA) for various events. Series is divided into two subseries; one subseries of posters and negatives of posters for events held at Rumours, a bar owned and operated by GALA; and one subseries of banners and flags used during Pride marches, demonstrations, and GALA meetings.

GayLine administrative records

Series contains administrative records for the GayLine, established in 1972. GayLine was renamed to the Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Line in 1994. Materials in this series include GayLine monthly and annual reports; call logs and templates; staff notebooks; correspondence; memos, minutes, and a certificate of incorporation relating to the name change; and notes.

GayLine recruitment and training materials

Series contains materials used in the recruitment and training of GayLine volunteers. Materials include training session records and schedules; help line manuals and crisis intervention strategies; GayLine pamphlets; volunteer application forms, information sheets, and guidelines; and correspondence relating to volunteers.

GayLine reference materials

Series contains reference materials used by volunteers of the GayLine. Series is divided into two subseries.
The first sub-series contains reference and educational materials used by GayLine volunteers covering issues such as homosexuality and coming out, sexual heath and AIDS prevention, alcoholism and substance abuse, abuse in LGBT relationships, parenting, discrimination, legal rights, and women's issues. Materials include pamphlets, flyers, legal briefs and resources, newsletters, essays, and bibliographies.
The second subseries contains reference materials relating to the operations of other helplines, as well as information about LGBT businesses and services, community groups, and events in Halifax, across Canada, and in the United States, Europe, Mexico, and Oceania. Materials include advertisements and press releases, pamphlets, newsletters, flyers, information sheets, and directories.

Growing up Black in Halifax

Series contains three audio reels from Growing up Black in Halifax, a three-part radio series broadcast on CKDU Radio 97.5. The series originated from a conversation between Rocky Jones and his daughter, Tracey Jones during Black History Month in February 1989. The series is an interview between Belinda MacFadyen of CKDU radio and Tracey Jones.

Halifax Pride committee records and ephemera

Series contains records relating to Ross Boutilier's involvement in the organization of the Halifax Pride parade, including committee records, financial records, reports, meeting minutes, correspondence, notes, memos, schedules, parade and Pride Guide planning materials, advertisements and press releases, and posters and pins worn or collected during Halifax Pride parades.

Henry Orenstein's records

Series consists of Henry Orenstein's materials regarding his professional activities, including photographs, negatives, sketches, programs, flyers, posters, postcards, slides, correspondence and other materials. Fonds contains several of Henry Orenstein's art pieces and sketches, including related to the "Sudbury Industrial Landscape" project. In the 1950s, Henry Orenstein was commissioned by the Mine, Mill and Smelter Workers of Sudbury to paint a mural for the local union hall, which was the centre of a broad-ranging cultural role of Mine Mill Local 598 in the Sudbury area. At that time, Mine Mill was in the midst of a series of raids by the United Steelworkers.

Historical records relating to the Nova Scotia Agriculture College between 1904 and 2010

Series contains records relating to the history of the Nova Scotia Agriculture College and its relationship with agriculture in Nova Scotia and across the world. This includes early drafts for a university motto and crest, past principal's signatures, and contributions to the provincial government between 1904-2010. Subseries' includes History of the Nova Scotia Agricultural College and agriculture in Nova Scotia. Record types found are textual files, reports, drawings, correspondence, books, and photographs.

Idle Reels

Series contains audio reels from the CKDU radio program Idle Reels. Idle Reels was one of the original programs broadcast on CKDU when it began in 1984. The program is made up of approximately 30 minute episodes of experimental sound compositions, which aired at 11:30 pm.

Independently Speaking

Series contains audio reels from the CKDU radio program Independently Speaking. This program features interviews with Halifax residents.

Individual Transferable Fish Quotas

Series comprises records created and collected by Richard Apostle in the course of his study of the impact of individual quotas on the fishing industry in the Maritimes. Record types include transcripts of interviews with fishermen, completed surveys, draft manuscripts, notes, and secondary research materials.

International Perspectives

Series contains audio reels from the CKDU radio program International Perspectives. This program discussed world issues and politics, and was hosted by various Political Science and International Relations graduate students at Dalhousie University, including Andy Knight, Sanjay Singh Yadav, and Peter McKenna.
