Himmelman Supply Company fonds

Fonds contains the business papers from Himmelman Supply Company and several other companies owned or operated by Ernest H. Himmelman and Lawrence Himmelman. These include O.K. Service Shipping Company, Himmelman Shipping Limited, Oakland Shipping Limited, LaHave Investments Limited, Nova Hereford Farms, and Himmelman Supermarket Limited. The fonds contains a variety of business papers, including meeting minutes and administrative records, ships' vessel papers, correspondence, financial statements and ledgers, legal agreements and contracts, blueprints and maps, and photographs.

Some of the personal papers of Lawrence Himmelman are also included in the fonds, including correspondence with the LaHave School, the local fire department, and other groups, financial records, and contracts and agreements.

In 1954, a fire in the Himmelman Supermarket destroyed many of the business records. Most records in the fonds are from after this date, though some vessel papers and correspondence from before the fire survived. Additional records for subsidiary companies are found in series for Himmelman Shipping Company, O.K. Service Shipping Limited, Oakland Shipping Limited, LaHave Shipping Limited, and LaHave Investments Limited. Each vessel from the O.K. Service Fleet also has a series. The Archives of Oland and Son Limited consists of records created by Oland and Son Limited and its affiliated companies. Some of the companies changed names after Oland and Son sold its brewing assets to John Labatt Limited. Records for these companies are included as well. Records range from 1867 to 1989, but were predominiately created between 1950 and 1971.

The Archives of Oland and Son and Affiliated Companies include a wide variety of materials, including administrative records, financial records, correspondence, photographs, advertising and marketing materials, beer production files, sales records, and legal documents. Administrative records typically include meeting minutes, annual reports, memorandums, surveys, and studies or reports on various aspects of the brewing industry and the breweries operated by Oland and Son. Beer production files typically include brewing books, yeast log books, fermentation schedules, production reports, and other records that document the beer production process. The Archives contains a large amount of correspondence between Oland and Son and its affiliated companies and various businesses, government agencies, associations, and individuals from across the Maritimes and around the world. Financial records typically include financial statements, cost reports, comparative statements, general ledgers, valuations, audit reports, and other records documenting the financial position of the various companies. Extensive advertising and marketing files exist, including advertising contracts and schedules, proofs and sketchs, reports and proposals, and budgets. The Archives also has extensive sales records documenting the sale of beer across the Maritimes, Quebec, and parts of the United States and the Caribbean. The Archives also contains hundreds of photographs and blueprints of the factories, factory equipment, and the Bluenose II.

Collection contains documents relating to the mercantile and shipping activities of William McMillan, McMillan was active in the business between 1893 and the early 1930's. Records include receipts, invoices and other material from other merchants he purchased or sold to, correspondence regarding the shipping of those goods, papers regarding the vessels he owned or contracted to sail the material to different parts of the world and correspondence from individuals who ran the ships. Also included are telegram notices, personal correspondence and other material. This collection also contains material from the Locke Family, the Harding Family, all in Lockeport, Nova Scotia. It also contains documents from different individuals in the town of Lockeport.

Part of the material included in this collection is the research of Trevor Bebb. He was working on the shipping history of Lockeport and the surrounding areas and as such has collected a great deal of material. Included in his papers are research notes, photocopies of shipping and customs records, diaries and logs, and printed material.

The accession contains index cards originally stored in 10 small plastic boxes and 1 long cardboard box. The cards were created by Trevor Bebb and contain entries from various shipping registers. The cards describe vessels, captains, and sailors. The accession also contains two oversized ledgers from the nineteenth century and several manuscript sheets of poetry. One plastic box was empty when it entered the archives.

It was also used as a notebook, with miscellaneous notes entered until 1976. Fonds also contains a letter to Mrs. Vernon Simpson (Olive Eliza Simpson) from Robert H. Winters, Ottawa, November 30, 1953. The letter is a reply to Mrs. Simpson's letter about changes to mail delievery in Simpson's Corner, Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia. The file with the letter also contains an order form from Veribest Speciality Company and two copies of handwritten minutes of a Community Club meeting held on November 15, 1951.

The fonds consists of administrative papers, blueprints, business and personal correspondence, cable code books and other reference works, export orders and papers, financial documents, insurance papers, legal documents, packaging samples, photographs, plans, printed material, reports, and vessels papers. The material spans 176 years and illustrates a family company passed through two incarnations and through several generations of administration, along with its related off-shoots companies and associations. The material deals with late 19th and early 20 century shipping, as well as the 20th century business of packing and exporting salt fish.

The fonds also contains papers of associated small companies including L.W. Vatcher Limited, and subsidiaries Acadia Fisheries and Smith Canneries, as well as papers from various investment dealings made by Fletcher S. Smith, including Parkdale Realty, Southern Realties, and Fenpark Realties, and agencies with which the Smiths were involved. Finally, the fonds includes various items from small companies including Dan Dauphiney Company Limited, Earle-Smith Partnership, Eastern Fisheries Limited, Fudge Shipping Company, Georgian Limited, Scotia Corporations, Sea Nymph Fisheries, and Smith/Romkey.
