The drawing is laid out on a grid, using pencil on tracing paper, and is probably an early study for an illustration commissioned for One hundred years of Dalhousie, 1818–1918 (1920). Ultimately, none of Lismer's portraits of President Mackenzie was published; the book featured a photographic portrait.
