Interviews of Harry Thurston

Series consists of sound recording interviews with: Mary Pratt, and Christopher Pratt: David Blackwood; A.J. Casson; David Adam Richards; Sandy Spencer; Joe Norris; John Houston; and Riordan regarding folk art; and Brian Porter, conducted by Harry Thurston.

Parmenides

Series contains notes and manuscripts on Plato's Parmenides, about which James Doull published several essays, one of which first appeared in Animus 4 (1999) and again, along with part 2, posthumously in Philosophy and Freedom: The Legacy of James Doull, ed. David G. Peddle and Neil G. Robertson (University of Toronto Press, 2003), 83-139. Many of these notes and drafts are written in Memorial University of Newfoundland examination answer books.

Miscellaneous

Series contains a range of material related to Dinwiddie's scientific interests including notes on fireworks, a list of industrial manufacturers in England, and a newspaper clipping of a letter written by Joseph Priestly. In addition, the section holds documents from Dinwiddie's time abroad such as a translation of Malay laws. Also included is Dinwiddie's university degree from Edinburgh.

Early Experiments

This sous-fond contains journals written by James Dinwiddie in which he recorded his early experiments. Written circa 1774, the journals contain observations on air and balloons and electricity as well as philosophical queries.

Notebooks of James Dinwiddie

This sous-fond contains James Dinwiddie's notebooks which include his notes from lectures at the Royal Institution of Great Britain as well as records of meteorological and chronological observations from his voyage to China. The material covers the period of 1776 to 1813.

Documents

This series includes documents collected by William Inglis Morse. Documents include an appointments of Joseph Howe and Thomas A. Turner, a pension decree from the War Department of the French Republic signed by Napoleon Bonaparte, an inscription to the memory of William Clark, Esq by Samuel Winslow, permits and more.

Vessel papers of the O'Brien family

This series contains vessel documents on the vessels “Janet”, “Eliza Oulton”, “LuckKnow”, “Rover”, “William”, “Willing Lass”, “Industry”, “Actress”, “Favourite”, “Eleanor Archibald” and “Lydia”.

Journal of W.J. Proudfoot

These are journals written by W.J. Proudfoot, the grandson of James Dinwiddie. Proudfoot's journals record daily events in both his personal and professional life. Included is a notebook with a biography of his father, James Proudfoot, who was Dinwiddie's son-in-law. Proudfoot also wrote a story of a watch owned by Dinwiddie and passed onto Proudfoot through his father. The entry culminates with the trial of the man who stole the watch and the rumours of the watch's possible fate.

Personal archives of Conrad Oland

Series consists of correspondence from George Woodhouse Culverwell. Files in the series were mixed in the Oland and Son fonds (MS-4-135). No other records from Conrad Oland are known to exist.

Timothy O'Brien

This series consists of records belonging to Timothy O'Brien. It is uncertain the connection between O'Brien and Frieze and Roy. Timothy O'Brien married Elizabeth Howe the widow of Edward Howe, the Honourable Joseph Howe's first born son. Types of records include a day book of O'Brien's finances and expenses, a certificate of the sale of shares on the vessel Hunter, and estate papers and last will and testiment of Timothy O'Brien.

Ledgers

These are two ledgers from early in the history of the Dominion Chair Company. The first is a listing of purchasers, items purchased and amount owing in chronological order. The second, an Index, is an account of amounts owing listed in alphabetical order by the name of the person. Thus the ledgers show two different ways in which the Dominion Chair Company recorded the same information.

Frieze Family papers

This series contains wills, deeds, estate records and accounts for David Frieze and wife Eliza Frieze, George Frieze and Jacob Frieze. Also included are two poems believed to have been authored by David Frieze.

Personal papers of George Lawson

Series includes personal and research papers of George Lawson, including a catalogue of his library, testimonials, research materials regarding botany, and an obituary notice.

Captain Isaac Rayne's records

Series consists of Isaac Rayne's personal records, including promissory notes, a deed, correspondence, family records and other textual records. There are also two locks of his son George's hair, presumably from his early childhood.

Vessel papers of Frieze and Roy

This series consists of records related to vessels owned or operated by Frieze and Roy. The majority of the records include insurance policies for the vessels and charter parties. Some other records include protests, manifests, bills of landing and crew lists. Some correspondence is also located in this series. A sketch of a brigantine is located in the oversize material

Legal

This series contains indentures, court summons, a lumber agreement between Adam Roy and David Pratt and insurance policies on the business recording how much they were insured for and what types of insurance they held.

Graphic Materials

This series consists of a sket of the cutter 'Mary' that belonged to Major Love, photographs of Bliss Carman and a portrait of Louisa May Alcott, which were collected by William Inglis Morse.

Artwork

Series includes unsigned artwork that likely belongs to Olive or Clauda Smith. Included are pencil drawings of landscapes, houses, and people, as well as monotone water paint drawings of people and landscapes. Some include a note on where the subject of the artwork is located.

Charles Creed Business Papers

The papers here are in the form of letters, minutes and notes (undated) pertaining to business with the Maritime Board of Trade. There is also a subscription book of unknown purpose.

Correspondence files of Frieze and Roy

This series consists of business correspondence to and from Frieze and Roy. The majority of the correspondence is regarding business affairs such as requests of purchases, orders, supplies, sales and shipping, cargo loads, as well as settling of accounts. Only a small percent of the correspondence is personal correspondence from family of Frieze and Roy.

Fred Sears papers and correspondence

Series includes papers and correspondence to and from Fred Sears written between 1905-1907 while professor of horticulture at the Nova Scotia Agricultural College.

Samuel Edgar Stewart

Sub-fonds primarily contains sermons, lectures, and notes written by Reverend S. Edgar Stewart and preserved by his son, H.L. Stewart. There are also some newspaper cuttings written by or referencing S. Edgar Stewart.

Marine Protests of Steam Ships

All marine protests in this series pertain to steam ships (ships which operate under a steam engine and not under sail), including barges. Some typed protests are the only copy for which there are no corresponding handwritten originals.
