File contains correspondence regarding the Nova Scotia Agricultural College's centennial anniversary in 2005. There are letters written to the NSAC by Sharon McLean, Commissioner of the Village of Bible Hill, Chris d'Entremont, Minister of the Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture and Fisheries, R.J. (Dick/Richard) Huggard, Class of 1956, Chair of the NSAC Foundation, Ton Traves, President and Co-Chancellor of Dalhousie University, and the NSAC Students' Union. Also included was a template of Canada Posts invitation to a new stamp unveiling.

Correspondence to Melville Cumming from the Office of the Commissioner for Works and Mines Nova Scotia

Item is correspondence from the Office of the Commissioner for Works and Mines Nova Scotia (E. H. Armstrong) to Melville Cumming, dated 5 November, 1913. It references an enclosed contract (two copies) for signature by W.K. Murray - contractor, in regards to the construction of the headhouse to the greenhouse.

There is also correspondence, photographs, and a copy of “Memories, Then and Now: Autobiographies of the Class of 1962,” which was created by Alumni Relations for the 40th and 50th year class reunions.

Fonds includes published and unpublished papers, correspondence to and from Fred Sears between 1905-1907 while he was Professor of Horticulture at Nova Scotia Agricultural College. The glass negative, lantern slides, and copy negatives and contact prints depict apples and orchard practice around the Agricultural campus and Nova Scotia. Notes on some of the sleeves of the negatives suggest that they date from the period 1898-1907.

Fonds contains correspondence from Dr. Frederick Waldemar (Waldo) Walsh to Dr. A. H. Harrington, regarding the Fruit and Vegetable Marketing Co-operative Organization in Nova Scotia in 1963. There are two series, one for certificates of Dr. Walsh, and another series for photographs taken at different events such as 4H events, Department of Nova Scotia Agriculture and Marketing conferences, retirement gatherings, and schools, while Walsh was a professor of Animal Husbandry [at the Nova Scotia Agricultural College] and sheep and swine promoter. Photos were taken and collected between 1910-1963.

Letter from Keiler Mackay

This item contains a letter to Dr. Melville Cumming from Keiler Mackay, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario written in May 25th, 1960. It writes about John Macrae’s role in WWI as Gunner of the Canadian Field Artillery and as a Medical Doctor in the Canadian Medical Unit. Attached to the is a newspaper clipping of Macrae’s poem “In Flanders Field"

Fonds contains photographs of Melville Cumming, as well as addresses, research articles/manuscripts, and letters related to agriculture in Nova Scotia written by Melville Cumming. Other material consists of records that were created while Dr. Cumming served as the first principal at the Nova Scotia Agricultural College from 1905-27. He was also an instructor animal husbandry, agronomy, bacteriology and public speaking, and also served as the Secretary of Agriculture for the province from 1907-25. Includes records from 1900-1970 comprised of photographs, certificates, articles, and speeches from the passing of Dr. Cumming.

Fonds contains records about the National Radio Farm Forum, a national rural listening-discussion group project. Records relate to the operations of the Nova Scotia and New Brunswick regions and consist of pamphlets, scripts, correspondence, memos, newsletters, guides, National Secretaries report, annual reports from Nova Scotia and New Brunswick regions, and minutes from the regional and national meetings and conferences from 1937-1965. Also included is an account of the activity of the Earltown, Nova Scotia Farm Forum Radio Group from the period of 1961-1962.

National Radio Farm Forum sponsored by the Canadian Association for Adult Education, the Canadian Federation of Agriculture and CBC. Initially, this program was a dramatized discussion of farm problems in wartime, arranged in cooperation with the Canadian Federation of Agriculture, and the Canadian Association for Adult Education. Eventually, it evolved into discussions by individuals from various communities across the country. The program was developed by Orville Shugg and Neil Morrison.

Nova Scotia Agricultural College development of a 'Training Program in Sustainable Agriculture' at the Universidad Francisco de Paula Santander (Columbia) project records

Subseries contains records that were created and used in the partnership project with the Nova Scotia Agricultural College (NSAC) and the Universidad Francisco de Paula Santander (Columbia) in the development of a 'Training Program in Sustainable Agriculture' at UFPS for both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The program ran between 1997 and 2002. The Universidad Francisco de Paula Santander (UFPS) was asked to play a key role in “El Salto Social”, the social leap forward, in the Santander region of Colombia. New curricula was to be introduced at UFPS, faculty being upgraded and new extension and outreach programs being established with the assistance of NSAC through this project. Other project partners were the Universidad de la Republica Uruguay (URU) of Uruguay and Saint Mary’s University (SMU). This was an Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC) University Program for Cooperation in Development (UPCD) Tier 2 project led by NSAC. NSAC Personnel involved were Norman Goodyear, Bonnie Waddell, Sam Asiedu, and Leanne French.

Fonds contains some of the policies of Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture and Marketing in 1996, correspondence from department staff from 1907 and 1972. There are Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture and Marketing scrapbooks of clippings of agricultural activity in Nova Scotia from 1900 to 1949. Entries include pencil drawings of animals and plants, newspaper clippings, as well as agricultural events around Nova Scotia from the NS Dept. of Agriculture annual reports. Scrapbooks also include pictures of Nova Scotia Agricultural College buildings, animal breeds, and events on campus. There are also annual reports of various departments of the Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture, and transcripts for Garden Guide Radio from 1980-1998.
