Fonds consists of records regarding imX’s corporate operations, productions, and other projects between 1985 and 2008. Corporate operations include imX Communications and its subsidiary companies: ImageX, Helix Animation, and North/Northeast Ventures. Film productions include theatrical full-length or short films, including documentaries. Television productions include made-for-television movies and documentaries, stand-alone productions, and series. Animated productions include feature length, television series, and shorts.

This fonds comprises ninety-four series which are arranged alphabetically by the name of the corporate entity, production, and project. Textual files contain a wide range of documents including scripts, call sheets and daily production reports, funding applications, cast and crew employment contracts, notes on location scouting, co-production agreements, marketing plans, budgets, music cue sheets, insurance coverage, and correspondence. Electronic mail (4.57 GB) downloaded from the e-mail server at imX corporate headquarters in Halifax contains 32,134 individual messages in 1,054 folders covering all aspects of corporate operations and business transactions. There are also 23,368 electronic files (15.6GB) that support the activities of imX, imageX, and Helix Animation documents in use between 1990 and 2008. Together with the text files, they represent a complete record of the activities of imX Communications and its affiliates.

Most corporate records have been retained in order to provide a full picture of what it is like to run a film production company in Nova Scotia. In addition, the records for three feature film productions, The Divine Ryans, Margaret’s Museum, and Love and Death on Long Island, have also been fully retained. 134 linear feet of textual material was not retained.

imX Communications.

The Peggy

Series consists of records documenting the administrative, legal, and publicity and marketing activities of this project. This short thirty-minute drama for television tells the story of two Acadian brothers deciding the fate of their inherited island, playing their childhood game “peggy.” It was set and shot in Sambro, Nova Scotia and represents contemporary Acadian life effectively. It was based on a radio play written by Silver Donald Cameron, with the script also written by Cameron. The Peggy was produced by Chris Zimmer, co-produced and directed by Cordell Wynne, and starred Gabrielle Rose, Marcel Sabourin, and Dennis O'Connor. It was broadcast as part of the CBC series Inside Stories. This series contains agreements, a cast list, credits, correspondence, English dialogue transcripts, music cue sheets, publicity stills, a synopsis, and video recordings.

Damage Done: The Drug War Odyssey/Drug Warrior

Series consists of records documenting the administrative, creative, financial, legal, production, and publicity and marketing activities of this project. Directed by Connie Littlefield, Damage Done was a documentary co-produced with the National Film Board of Canada. It featured interviews with current and former members of law enforcement who disagreed with the way in which the illegal drugs trade was policed and prosecuted. This series contains agreements, applications, budget materials, a crew list, a credit roll, film festival and awards documents, financing schedules, press clippings, a marketing plan, publicity clips, stock footage, interviews, reference materials, and video and audio recordings.

Air Guitar in Oulu : [film production records]

Series consists of records documenting the creative and legal activities of this project. This quirky one-hour documentary directed by Kent Sobey follows Andrew Buckles on his journey to Oulu, Finland to compete in the World Air Guitar Competition. The film was produced between 2002 and 2003 for Bravo!, and the Independent Film Channel. Geoffrey Turnbull was producer and Chris Zimmer was Executive Producer. Cinematography was done by Les Krizsan. Air Guitar in Oulu received attention from international media and has been compared to such acclaimed films as Project Grizzly and American Movie.
