Series consists of records documenting the administrative, creative, financial, legal, production, and publicity and marketing activities of this company. All corporate files relating to imX have been retained, including the electronic records of corporate administration and operations of imX copied from hard drives. Electronic materials include textual, graphic, and audio-visual materials in various digital formats. Some of these materials are digital copies of materials in project series that were maintained on drives. Some materials in this series exist in project files printed on paper or copied to disc or tape. This series contains accounting and budget information, agreements, annual financial statements, biographies, business plans, business and legal arrangements and agreements, corporate logos, conference records, correspondence, demos, distribution arrangements and agreements, educational mentorship information, film development information, playback questionnaires, pre-development scripts, promotional materials for various film festivals, press releases, promotional stills, and documentation on web site development and design.

imX Correspondence : Email Files

imX email files contain incoming and outgoing email with attachments from 1990-2008 which are arranged by imX correspondent and further divided by subject. Five main folders include: 1) Anne Bernier, 1990-2004; 2) Anne Bernier, 2005-2006; 3) Anne Bernier, 2007-2008; 4) Chris Zimmer, 2005-2008; and, 5) Victoria Mainprize, 2002- 2008. Files document imX corporate operations and business transactions between 1990 and 2008. The series also contains an electronic text conversion of same email messages which provides easy access to their contents without using PST software.

Fonds consists of records regarding imX’s corporate operations, productions, and other projects between 1985 and 2008. Corporate operations include imX Communications and its subsidiary companies: ImageX, Helix Animation, and North/Northeast Ventures. Film productions include theatrical full-length or short films, including documentaries. Television productions include made-for-television movies and documentaries, stand-alone productions, and series. Animated productions include feature length, television series, and shorts.

This fonds comprises ninety-four series which are arranged alphabetically by the name of the corporate entity, production, and project. Textual files contain a wide range of documents including scripts, call sheets and daily production reports, funding applications, cast and crew employment contracts, notes on location scouting, co-production agreements, marketing plans, budgets, music cue sheets, insurance coverage, and correspondence. Electronic mail (4.57 GB) downloaded from the e-mail server at imX corporate headquarters in Halifax contains 32,134 individual messages in 1,054 folders covering all aspects of corporate operations and business transactions. There are also 23,368 electronic files (15.6GB) that support the activities of imX, imageX, and Helix Animation documents in use between 1990 and 2008. Together with the text files, they represent a complete record of the activities of imX Communications and its affiliates.

Most corporate records have been retained in order to provide a full picture of what it is like to run a film production company in Nova Scotia. In addition, the records for three feature film productions, The Divine Ryans, Margaret’s Museum, and Love and Death on Long Island, have also been fully retained. 134 linear feet of textual material was not retained.

The Can

Series consists of records documenting the administrative, creative, financial, and legal activities of this project. The project was a potential television sitcom that was pitched to the CBC and was to focus on accountants and auditors working for Revenue Canada. This series contains agreements, budget development working papers, a cast list, correspondence, funding applications, scripts, and storylines.

Damage Done: The Drug War Odyssey/Drug Warrior

Series consists of records documenting the administrative, creative, financial, legal, production, and publicity and marketing activities of this project. Directed by Connie Littlefield, Damage Done was a documentary co-produced with the National Film Board of Canada. It featured interviews with current and former members of law enforcement who disagreed with the way in which the illegal drugs trade was policed and prosecuted. This series contains agreements, applications, budget materials, a crew list, a credit roll, film festival and awards documents, financing schedules, press clippings, a marketing plan, publicity clips, stock footage, interviews, reference materials, and video and audio recordings.

Distribution (Electronic) Files

Distribution folder contains product distribution records and working files from 2000-2008. Files include administrative transactions with film agencies, royalties, correspondence, distributor reports for various productions, producer reports and spreadsheets, revenues, exploitation reports, distribution breakdowns, deliveries information, and digital projections information.

Accounting (Electronic) Files

Accounting folder contains accounting records from 1999-2008. Files include correspondence, spreadsheets and financial reports, invoices, accounting databases, accounting system backups, policies, tax preparation applications and files, and working files.

Great Butterfly Hunt

Series consists of records documenting the administrative, creative, financial, and legal activities of this project. Also known as Brendan's Dream and The Dream Warrior, this potential children's feature film was written by T.H. Hatte and centres on the Monarch butterfly migration that occurs in Mexico every year. This series contains agreements, applications, a biography, correspondence, research, script notes and a script, and a synopsis and treatment.

Publicity (Electronic) Files

Publicity folder contains publicity working files and products from 2000-2008. Files include animated and other logos, Helix, events, press releases, photos, media contact lists, corporate profile information and correspondence.

Crafty Cow

Series consists of records documenting the administrative, creative, financial, legal, production, and publicity and marketing activities of this project. The project was a potential children's animated series starring a bovine detective, introduced in Imagex's The Real Howard Spitz. It was a major initiative for imX. This series contains agreements, an assignment of copyright, biographies, consent documents, correspondence, financial development applications, notes, a one-sheet, research, scripts, schedules, sample images, video and audio recordings, and a website proposal.

Margaret's Museum

Series consists of records documenting the administrative, creative, financial, legal, production, and publicity and marketing activities of this project. This feature film, based on the short story by Sheldon Currie entitled "The Glace Bay Miners' Museum," focuses on coal miners and their families in 1940s Cape Breton. The 114-minute drama was co-produced by Imagex, directed by Mort Ransen, written by Sheldon Currie, and starred Helena Bonham Carter, Clive Russell, and Kate Nelligan. It was nominated for eleven Genies in 1995, winning the awards for Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actress. The film was also awarded best picture awards at the annual San Sebastian Festival in Spain, the Vancouver International Film Festival, and the Atlantic Film Festival. All records were kept as an example of the imX production process. The series contains accounting and payroll records, agreements, applications, biographies, budgets, call sheets, correspondence, cost reports, a credit and contact list, crew lists, a dialogue list, location scout stills, location sketches, music cue sheets, press kits, press releases, production documents, production stills, posters, production reports, research notes, schedules, scripts, a supplier contact list, a synopsis, and video recordings.

Love, Sex and Eating the Bones

Series consists of records documenting the administrative, creative, financial, legal, production, and publicity and marketing activities of this project. This feature film is set in the contemporary black urban underground of Toronto and focuses on a man in the early stages of a relationship with a woman while trying to overcome his addiction to pornography. The 100-minute romantic comedy was co-produced by imX, written and directed by David Sutherland, and starred Hill Harper and Marlyne Afflack. This series contains agreements, a budget, correspondence, daily production sheets, a marketing plan, a project summary, a proposal, producer's notes, a public relations packet, readers' reports, scripts, schedules, a synopsis, and test screening data.
