Maritime Telephone and Telegraph Company historical photograph collection

Deries consists of photographs created and collected by the Maritime Telegraph and Telephone Company Limited. Photographs from the Nova Scotia Telegraph Company, Island Telephone Company and local exchanges across Nova Scotia are also included. Photographs cover the history of Maritime telephone companies predominantly Maritime Telephone and Telegraph Company.

Photographs consist of company employees, telephone switchboards and equipment, operators at switchboards, company sports teams, company events and picnics, line crews repairing and building lines, microwave equipment and antennas, scenery of Halifax, Dartmouth and many smaller towns across Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, company crew aiding in the rescue efforts at Moose River Gold Mines, the Sydney-Louisbourg Railway, the Telephone Association of Canada and the Telephone Pioneers Association members.

File consists of a compilation of directories for the Nova Scotia Telephone Company that are bound together. Its contents include the directory of subscribers for Halifax and Dartmouth May 1900, corrections and additions to the subscribers directory of June 1905, the list of subscribers for Halifax and Dartmouth 1905, the subscriber directory for Amherst, N.S. for 1906,and the June 1906 official telephone directory for the city of Halifax, Dartmouth and Suburbs.

Write up with photograph says, " "Charley" Removing the cable off the terminal pole by head office building reminded me of a photo I had of it and though perhaps other employees would like to [?]. It was taken in 1901. There are J.J. Morrow, C. Romo and J. Martin - Romo got in contact with a live wire and was killed some time after. - The 100 pr. 19 ga. cable we took out was larger than the 400 pr. we use now. The picture was taken looking North on Hollis Street. You can see Salter Street and the board fence and tree where the head office building is now. The Russell house stood back from the corner house which they claimed was framed in England and brough out and erected." - C. Peake, May 11th, 1934. C. Romo was killed March 13, 1902.
