J. Gordon Duff (1930-2014) was born in Rosetown, Saskatchewan on April 3, 1930. He graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy (BSP) degree in 1953 and continued his studies there, obtaining an MSc degree in 1955. In 1958, he received a PhD (Pharm. Chem.) from the University of Florida.

He joined Dalhousie University in 1961 as the first Director of the College of Pharmacy, a post he maintained for 11 years. During his tenure, he played a major role in developing the undergraduate program. His responsibilities expanded to include the implementation of several other programs, including a Research program, Master of Science, Continuing Education, and Clinical Pharmacy program. He retired in 1990 after 29 years of teaching in the College of Pharmacy, followed by further involvement with the school. Dr. Duff earned much respect in pharmacy academia across Canada, serving in key roles including chair of CCPF and president of both CFP and CAHP.

An historian at heart, Duff has preserved historical items and was the major force behind the establishment of the historical pharmacy at Sherbrooke Village, as well as collecting and displaying the archives at the College of Pharmacy. As an active member in various professional associations, he has served on numerous committees at the university, provincial and national level. Dr. Duff was appointed Professor Emeritus in 1991. He died in Halifax on December 11, 2014.
