"Aboard Bluenose II" by James Johnson

File contains an article about the Bluenose II written by James Johnson, a former member of the crew. The article was published in Crier : Atlantic Canada's Monthly News Magazine. Vol. 1, No. 2, August, 1964.

Bluenose II proposed modification to propulsion shafting

Item consists of two copies of a drawing of the propulsion shafting of the Bluenose II. The drawing includes a plan view of the existing shafting and a detail of the proposed modification, showing the installation of a twin disc coupling. The drawing was completed by G. T. Nelson from the Halifax Shipyards Drawing Office on September 23rd, 1965. The drawing is labelled "DRG. No. MX-625." Both copies of the drawing are stamped and dated by Halifax Shipyards. One copy has a stamp of approval from the Canada Department of Transport, which is dated October 4th, 1965.

Item is a technical drawing of the existing electrical arrangement of the Bluenose II. The drawing was prepared on July 19th, 1965 for the Halifax Shipyards as is labelled "Sketch No H.S.L.-BL/EL-2." The sketch is overlaid with proposals for expansions or changes to the arrangement, which are printed in red.

Item is a list of vessels taken at Machias and and Penobscot, listed by name and type. The Penobscot Expedition was a 26-day raid led by Sir John Sherbrooke on Hampden, Bangor and Machias, resulting in the British occupation of Castine for the remainder of the War of 1812. The tariff duties obtained there, called the Castine Fund, was used to establish Dalhousie University.

Item consists of two copies of proposed schematic diagram of the electrical distribution of the Bluenose II. The drawing is labelled "Sketch No H.S.L.-BL/EL-18." The drawing was completed on January 29th, 1965 for Halifax Shipyards. One copy of the drawing includes a table of estimated sea loads that is not present on the other copy

The Shipping Reference Collection incorporates virtually all miscellanous shipping records and reference material that were accessioned as part of "MS-8-Ref." A large portion of the collection consists of reference files on various vessels and shipping lines. A card-catalogue index known as "Master and Mates" provides references to microfilmed vessel papers, trade records, registers, and other related materials. The collection also includes photographs, slides, and published materials such as the Lloyd's Register of Ships.

The accession contains index cards originally stored in 10 small plastic boxes and 1 long cardboard box. The cards were created by Trevor Bebb and contain entries from various shipping registers. The cards describe vessels, captains, and sailors. The accession also contains two oversized ledgers from the nineteenth century and several manuscript sheets of poetry. One plastic box was empty when it entered the archives.
