"Chanties and Other Songs of the Sea" : [manuscript]

Item is a collection of transcribed sea chanties, as sung aboard vessels out of Liverpool, Nova Scotia in the 1870's, 1880's, and 1890's, and recalled in whole or part by William H. Smith, of Liverpool, N.S. (born 1867). The words were taken down and prepared in typescript by his son T. Brenton Smith, in the year 1940. Fonds consists of research notes and materials on the history of Nova Scotia and, more specifically, Liverpool and its prominent families, including family trees and hand-drawn annotated maps. Also included are many manuscripts on a variety of topics relating to Tupper's historical research, ranging from John Cabot and the early explorers to lesser-known local events in the history of Nova Scotia. Also present is a small collection of personal diaries and copies of deeds and legal documents from the Tupper family.

The Legion building is located on the old Inness wharf. The temporary wooden bridge in the foreground carries electric cables and a water main. In the bottom left corner of the photograph is part of a steel form for concrete abutment for the new, permanent bridge.

The photograph has a stamp marking it copyright to the Nova Scotia Bureau of Information on the reverse side. The wooden bust on the left was carved by Milton-based woodcarver, George Crouse, whose work was prominent in the 1850's and 60's. Crouse carved figureheads and bow devices for many newly built Liverpool (Nova Scotia) ships. The bust in the photograph is a childhood likeness of Captain Samuel Kempton who also hailed from Milton. Kempton was the skipper of a packet schooner for many years that ran the Halifax - Liverpool - Boston route.
