Brian Hall's Correspondence

BSPS literary journals

Series contains one copy of each journal produced by the BSPS, which began with its first issue as the Bourbon Street Journal, then became BSPS Journal, before being renamed Poetry Halifax Dartmouth in 1988.

Buddy and Hoss

Series consists of records documenting the administrative, creative, financial, and legal activities of this project. Developed by David Abitson, this animation project was centred on two auto mechanics and the world of car racing. It remained in pre-development and was never brought to production. This series contains agreements, applications, biographies, budget development, correspondence, character and set sketches, a storyboard, one-sheets, a synopsis, and treatments.

Budgeting and accounting

This series contains materials regarding Centre for Art Tapes budgeting and accounting. Records include statistical profiles, invoices, correspondence, financial statements, audits and unaudited financial statements.

Business and personal archives of William McMillan

Sousfonds contains documents relating to the mercantile and shipping activities of William McMillan. McMillan was active in the business between 1893 and the early 1930s. The material includes financial records from other merchants he purchased or sold to; correspondence regarding the shipping of those goods; papers regarding the vessels he owned or contracted to sail the goods to different parts of the world, especially to the West Indies; and correspondence from individuals who ran the ships. Also included are telegram notices, personal correspondence and other material.

McMillan, William

Business archives of A. Keith and Son Limited

Series contains the records of A. Keith and Son Limited that were created after the company was purchased by Oland and Son Limited and before it was bought by John Labatt Limited. Series also contains some financial records from A. Keith and Son created prior to being purchased by Oland and Son Limited. Note: All records that deal jointly with A. Keith and Son and Oland and Son are filed in the Oland and Son Limited series.

Series is broken into nine sub-series: Administrative, Beer Production, Correspondence, Financial, Labour and Employee Relations, Legal, Marketing and Advertising, and Photographs.

Administrative sub-series contains records created by the administrative branches of A. Keith and Son and include inventories, appraisals, meeting minutes, responses to various surveys from the Dominion Bureau of Statistics, and company reports and memorandums.

Beer Production sub-series contains records created by the Production Department, Bottling Department, and non-sales related records from the Shipping Department. Records include brewers' recipe books, logbooks, yeast books, and production reports. Some beer production records for Olands Brewery Limited are also filed in the Beer Production Sub-Series of Oland and Son Limited.

Blueprints sub-series contains prints and sketches of brewery equipment and buildings.

Correspondence sub-series contains correspondence and related records created by various departments of A. Keith and Son, primarily the executive offices of the company. Most correspondence is filed by the name of the correspondent. Some correspondence is filed by the subject of the correspondence file. Correspondents include businesses and suppliers, associations and government agencies, and other companies affiliated with Oland and Son.

Financial sub-series contains financial records created by executives of A. Keith and Son and the company's auditors and accountants. Records include audited financial statements, a sample of unaudited financial statements, cost statements, general ledgers, share registers, and other financial summaries. Some financial records for Olands Brewery Limited are also filed in the Beer Production Sub-Series of Oland and Son Limited.

Labour and Employee Relations sub-series contains records created by the Labour Management Committee and representatives from Local 361 of the International Union of United Brewery, Flour, Cereal, Soft Drink, and Distillery Workers of America. Records include meeting minutes, surveys, labour agreements, and other employee records. Some labour and employee relations records for Olands Brewery Limited are also filed in the Beer Production Sub-Series of Oland and Son Limited.

Legal sub-series contains the Memorandum of Association, a brewers' license application, and other agreements.

Marketing and Advertising sub-series contains records created for A. Keith and Son by advertising companies. Records include an advertising budget and sample advertisiments.

Photographs sub-series contains photographs and negatives of the brewery and of sports teams sponsored by A. Keith and Son.

Business archives of Oland and Son Limited

Series contains records created by Oland and Son Limited between 1867 and 1989. Series also contains records created by Oland and Son Limited that deal with subsidiary companies such as A. Keith and Son Limited and Oland's Brewery Limited. Series is broken into 13 Sub-Series: Administrative, Beer Production, Blueprints and Maps, Brewing and Industry Associations, Company History, Correspondence, Financial, Labour and Employee Relations, Legal, Marketing and Advertising, Photographs, Public Relations, and Sales Department.

Administrative Sub-Series contains records created by the executives of the company or created for the company by business partners and subsidiaries. Sub-Series includes annual reports, director's reports, various operational and business reports, meeting minutes, surveys, proposals, and memorandums. Records in the Administrative Sub-Series may deal with A. Keith and Son Limited, Oland's Brewery Limited, or other subsidiaries of Oland and Son Limited. Beer Production Sub-Series contains records created by the production and bottling departments. Sub-Series includes brew books, yeast books and logs, production reports and inventories, statistical reports, bottling reports, logs, and reports on beer production. Reports in the Beer Production Sub-Series may deal with A. Keith and Son Limited and Oland's Brewery Limited.

Blueprints and Maps Sub-Series contains designs of factory equipment and buildings, and maps outlining proposed developments or land holdings. Blueprints were primarily created by the company that manufactures the equipment or the contractor working on construction projects.

Brewing and Industry Associations Sub-Series contains records generated through Oland and Son's affiliation with various brewing and industry associations including the Brewers Association of Canada, Dominion Brewing Association, and Nova Scotia Brewers Institute. Sub-Series contains industry and market reports, meeting minutes, training manuals, publications, and correspondence. Correspondence with brewing associations is also filed in the Correspondence Sub-Series.

Company History Sub-Series contains materials relating to the general history of Oland and Son and its affiliated companies. Sub-Series includes scrapbooks and written transcriptions of the history of Oland and Son.

Correspondence Sub-Series contains correspondence between Oland and Son Limited and its affiliaited companies or its business partners. Correspondence is wide ranging and deals with company management, finances, production, sales, marketing and advertising, public relations, and the general activities of the company. Correspondents include Oland and Son's barristers and solicitors, contractors, consultants, government departments, sales agents, manufacturers, charities, and other groups who corresponded with the company. Sub-Series also contains personal correspondence of Robert T. Merchant, R.D. Mussett, and Bruce Oland. Correspondence is generally filed by the name of the correspondent, except where the original file was labelled by subject.

Financial Sub-Series contains financial records created by or for Oland and Son Limited. Sub-Series contains financial statements, cost statements, general ledgers, journals of production costs, comparative balance sheets, statements of investments, and other records documenting the financial position of the company. Financial records dealing jointly with Oland and Son Limited and some or all of its affiliated companies are also included. Sub-Series also contains financial records created by brewing companies acquired by Oland and Son or the Oland Family, including the Halifax Breweries and Army and Navy Brewery.

Labour and Employee Relations Sub-Series contains records involving labour management and negotiations, personnel management, hiring, and the company pension plan. Sub-Series contains meeting minutes, correspondence, reports, labour agreements, pension plans, valuations of pension plans, lists of employees, and other records involving the workforce of Oland and Son. Sub-Series may also contain records relating to the workforce of subsidiary companies.

Legal Sub-Series contains legal agreements, deeds, statements, resolutions, and other legal records created by or for Oland and Son Limited. Sub-Series contains the bound sale agreement between Oland and Son and John Labatt Limited.

Marketing and Advertising Sub-Series contains records from the Sales Department involving the marketing and advertising operations of the company. Many records deal jointly with Oland and Son Limited and its subsidiaries, including A. Keith and Son, Oland's Brewer's Grain and Yeast, and Oland's Brewery Limited. Sub-Series also contains materials relating to the marketing of the Bluenose II. Sub-Series contains marketing reports, budget proposals, advertising proofs, advertising contracts, schedules, advertising copy, and memorandums and correspondence regarding the marketing activities of the company.

Photographs Sub-Series contains photographs of factory equipment, sponsored sports teams and events, delivery trucks, company employees, and the general activities of the company.

Public Relations Sub-Series contains records relating to Oland and Son's public relations activities, including charitable donations, sponsored sports teams, and tours and receptions at the breweries. Sub-Series also contains "What's Brewing at Oland's," a bi-monthly publication produced by the company for its employees and their families.

Sales Department Sub-Series contains records created by the Sales Department. Sub-Series includes sales reports, sales analyses, expense reports, market studies, memorandums and correspondence regarding sales and packaging materials, samples of sales orders, monthly sales reports sent to various brewing associations and government liquor commissions, and customer complaints about beer and bottle quality. Some sales reports deal jointly with products created by Oland and Son and A. Keith and Son.

Business archives of the Technical Univesity of Nova Scotia Office of the President and Director of Tech Education

Series consists of files created in the office of the College President and Director of Technical Education, primarily from 1911 to 1947, when Dr. F.H. Sexton held the dual President/Director posting. There are some files from the tenure of Dr. A.E. Cameron, and scattered few from Dr. Holbrook's tenure, then more from the 1980s and 1990s. These later records appear to have been selected by the last President and/or the Department of Community Relations as to what should be transferred to the Archives (i.e. very few and very select records remain from what must have been a larger whole). Series documents vocational education through the operation of evening classes and mining schools, including hiring of instructors, inspection reports, and student records. Photographs of technical education classes are found in the Technical Education Photographs series. The College's contribution to the war effort and to the vocational rehabilitation of discharged soldiers is also documented in this series and the Technical Education Photographs series. Series also documents the administration of NSTC, including hiring of faculty, faculty meetings, correspondence with students, curriculum development, scholarship administration and student records. The President's records also include files from Sexton's involvement in other organizations, including the Education Committee of the Halifax YMCA's Red Triangle Hut, the Maritime Board of the Canadian National Institute for the Blind, the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy; the Central Advisory Committee of the Carnegie Corporation; the Biological Board of Canada; the Canadian Education Association; the Rotary Club of Canada; Commission on Highway Dust Prevention; and the Halifax Conservatory of Music. Of particular note are files from Sexton's 1924-1927 tenure as President of the Victoria School of Art and Design, which became the Nova Scotia College of Art in 1925, and from the Board of Governors of the Nova Scotia Museum of Science, 1948-1952. Files are arranged in their original order - alphabetical by subject within each year. College files and technical education files were intermingled.

Business papers re. Henry House

Series includes correspondence and papers relating to the business side of Henry House, including architectural plans for proposed additions/alterations to the building.

Cache Creek burial site analysis

Series contains records related to Binkley's analysis of the Cache Creek burial site in British Columbia. Records include some correspondence, inventory and notes on bones found at the site, a research grant application with a proposal of study, the final report with details on research, field notes and photographs of the bones, and a photograph of the burial site in 1954.

Cadillac Girls

Series consists of records documenting the administrative, creative, financial, legal, production, and publicity and marketing activities of this project. This feature film, set in Cape Breton and filmed in various Nova Scotia locations, tells the story of a Maritime woman and her daughter coming home from British Columbia and offers the 1990's response to what happens after Maritimers “go down the road". The 96-minute drama was co-produced by Imagex, directed by Nicholas Kendall, and written by Peter Behrens. The cast starred Jennifer Dale, Mia Kirshner, and Gregory Harrison. The film also featured Adam Beach early in his career. This series contains agreements, biographies, a budget, copyright documents, correspondence, a cost summary, film posters, licenses, negatives, a press kit, production stills, publicity stills, a release copy, schedules, screening copies, scripts and transcripts, the trailer, and video recordings.

Calendars and programs

The series consists of calendars and programs for various Dalhousie Art Gallery events from 1965 to 2008, with one or two copies of each issue. Information includes schedules of exhibitions, films, lectures, presentations, concerts, lunch-hour events, special events, gallery hours and contact information.

Canada Council

Series contains correspondence, applications, activity reports, promotional materials, and posters related to the Canada Council.

Canadian Arctic

Series includes maps, booklets, correspondence, newsletters, and other documents related to Barbara Hinds’ interest and travels in the Canadian Arctic.

Canadian politics

Series contains notes and manuscript drafts for Doull's political writings, including, posthumously, "The Philosophical Basis Of Constitutional Discussion In Canada," in Philosophy and Freedom: The Legacy of James Doull, ed. David G. Peddle and Neil G. Robertson (University of Toronto Press, 2003).

Captain Isaac Rayne's records

Series consists of Isaac Rayne's personal records, including promissory notes, a deed, correspondence, family records and other textual records. There are also two locks of his son George's hair, presumably from his early childhood.

Cashfire

Series consists of records documenting the creative and legal activities of this project. The project was a potential feature film about the story of a Russian immigrant in the United States who finds herself caught up in a financial scandal. It was intended to be co-produced with a Russian production company. This series contains an agreement, a script, and a synopsis.

Cassandra's Wedding

Series consists of records documenting the administrative and creative activities of the project. The project was a potential feature film about one twin sister trying to undo the wedding of the other. This series contains correspondence, a script, and a proposed treatment.

Cassette Tape Index

This subseries contains the two paper indexes for the tape series and the traditional index. The index was created for Joan Cummings, but is unclear whether is was edited solely by her.

In several instances there are two tapes with the same number. Rather then re-number the tape collection, the two tapes are labelled under one file and listed as 1 and 2 - although the actual tapes do not have 1 and 2 - the tapes are in order, next to each other in their box, and have front labels with the description of what is on each tape.

Catalogues

Series contains catalogues of various products manufactured by L.E. Shaw. Series also contains catalogues and bulletins collected by the company.

Series consists of materials created and/or accumulated by Catherine (Murray) Creighton, including her diaries, correspondence, financial papers, and a variety of personal papers. Records in the series provide a well-rounded depiction of her daily life experiences, values, financial well-being, and her family.
