Name of creator

Biographical history

Dr. Reid was born in London, Ontario in 1836 and graduated from the medical school (M.D.,C.M.) at McGill University in 1858. He completed post-graduate training (L.R.C.S.) at the University of Edinburgh in 1858 and later graduated from the University of New York in 1865 (M.D.).

After his studies, he relocated to Nova Scotia and was appointed Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Dalhousie University in 1868. In 1875, Dr. Reid was appointed Dean of the Halifax Medical College and was elected President of this institution in 1887.

Dr. Reid added to his professional responsibilities when he accepted an appointment as Superintendent of Victoria General Hospital in 1892. He retired from both posts in 1898, at which time he became Nova Scotia's first Provincial Health Officer until his retirement in 1913. He passed away on February 26, 1920.

Custodial history

The materials were accessioned by the Dalhousie University Archives in 1984. The custodial history is unknown.
